Zazen—seated meditation—is the practice of experiencing what’s happening in the moment. Within the Zen tradition there are ways of relating to the body, the breath, and the mind that help evoke a sustained engagement in simple, open awareness while practicing zazen. There are also traditional ways to help bring zazen heart-mind to daily activities.

During this six-week class, we will learn about and put into practice traditional zazen techniques of body, breath, and mind. There will be weekly opportunities to watch lectures and practice meditation with on-demand recordings of Paul Haller, followed by live online sessions led by Anshi Zachary Smith.

  • Body – Study the elements of posture that offer solid support to the body so it expresses itself naturally and brings balance and steadiness to zazen practice.
  • Breath – Explore attention to energy, the release of tension, and the soft but engaged posture developed through the act of breathing in zazen.
  • Awareness – Bring awareness to the natural cycle that returns to presence. Open to the possibilities that arise from an attitude of flexibility and skillfulness.
