Eight Classes on Tuesdays, October 7–November 25, 7:15–8:45 pm PT
With Ryushin Paul Haller and other teachers
This series is focused on expressing practice in our lives, and is designed to help participants develop or deepen a practice of zazen (awareness meditation) and mindfulness during daily activities and relationships. Meditation experience would be helpful, but is not essential. Detailed awareness instructions will be offered throughout the course.
Establishing the Path of Practice has three sections that are designed to be taken sequentially, but can be taken separately. To accommodate those who would like to join the second semester but haven’t taken the first semester, the videos and weekly summaries of the first semester will be available on the EPP Class portal.
The 8-week second semester will begin on Tuesday, October 7. Please register by Monday, October 6.
EPP1 offered guidance on the process of developing a sustained awareness and cultivating compassion through the guidance of the Brahma Viharas. Meeting ourselves and others with compassion lessens our reactiveness and initiates a spacious awareness.
EPP2 develops a deepening of awareness and noticing how it effects how we respond to self and others. Through practicing with the 5 spiritual faculties (Trust, Viriya, Sati, Samadhi and Wisdom) they create the capacity to look deeply into how we create our reality. As we learn to see how we respond to our experiences, we see how we cause suffering for ourselves and others. This helps cultivate insightful responses and see the path beyond suffering and how to nurture awakening.
Those who sign up for EPP 2 and haven’t taken EPP 1 can access the weekly videos, summaries and suggested practices of the EPP 1 class on SFZC website portal.
Each section includes meditation, contemplation, reflections, and suggested practices based on Early Buddhist and Zen teachings. They also include yoga and breathing exercises, and the opportunity to explore practice themes through experiential exercises/practices. Participants will have the option to meet regularly in a small group led by a teacher to discuss their experience with the suggested practices.
There will be a Free Informational Session to introduce Establishing the Path of Practice, Part 2 on Saturday, August 9. It will take place in the City Center dining room and will also be available via livestream.
