Zazen is simply the Dharma gate of peace and bliss, the practice-realization of totally culminated awakening.—Eihei Dogen

Fukanzazengi is Dogen’s fundamental instructions for zazen. Partly borrowed from prior Chinese texts, Dogen adds attitudinal instructions about Zen practice. He describes the essential art of zazen, and addresses the importance of sustaining practice even after realizing the omnipresence of awakening. Dogen describes being fully blocked by the resolute stability of zazen, and points directly to the real thing. One word of Shohaku Okumura’s translation inspired Taigen to move to Kyoto for two years to work on translations of Dogen with him.

This seminar is part of our ongoing Zen Foundations series and follows a session on Dogen's Self-Fulfilling Samadhi—Jijuyu Zammai. Please note that while it is not mandatory to attend both sessions, participants are encouraged to attend both to gain a fuller understanding of Dogen’s teachings. Recordings will be available for those who cannot attend in person.
