Three Thursdays, November 2, 16, and 30, 5 – 6:30 pm PT

San Francisco Zen Center is excited to present a comprehensive three-session online course, led by the esteemed Myokei Caine-Barrett, diving deep into the profound teachings of Nichiren Buddhism. The Lotus Sutra holds a unique place within many Buddhist traditions. Eihei Dogen, the founder of Soto Zen, references the Lotus Sutra more than any other, showcasing its fundamental significance. Likewise, Dogen's contemporary, Nichiren Shonen, venerates the Lotus Sutra as central to its teachings and practices.

This course will:

  • Journey into the life and teachings of Nichiren Shonen as a beacon for social justice. Despite contemporary notions of gender inequality, Nichiren defied the cultural expectations of his time.
  • Explore Nichiren's empowering letters addressed to women, emphasizing teachings from the Lotus Sutra.
  • Unravel the depth of the Omandala Gohonzon, "The Great Mandala, Venerated Supreme." Rooted in the Lotus Sutra, it embodies the ethos of sangha building and the perpetual unity of being.
  • Delve into the intricate teaching of Ichinen Sanzen, providing insights into life's causes and conditions and fostering a profound sense of non-separation.

On Saturday, October 14, 2 – 3:30 pm PT, Myokei will engage in an online discussion with Eli Brown-Stevenson on the topic Bridging Traditions: Nichiren's Defiance and Modern Buddhism. The discussion requires no fee; please register on the event page to receive the Zoom link.
