The Song of Awakening (Zhengdao-ge in Chinese; Shodoka in Japanese) has been a much revered text in Zen monasteries over the centuries, but it is rarely studied at San Francisco Zen Center. In this half-day study workshop, we will cover the story of its author, Yongjia Xanjue (Yoka Daishi in Japanese), read the text in its entirety, and place it in the context of Zen poetry from the early generations of Zen in China.
