In this four-class series, we will study how to create stability and ease in the meditation position. Zazen, “the Dharma gate of repose and bliss,” is supported by a physical posture that is called “upright” in Buddhist literature. This “upright” is not a stiffly-held straightness, but a “flesh and bones” uprightness, with energy that is grounded and flows freely upwards and outwards.

Classes will include Buddha’s teachings on mindfulness of the body as recorded in the Pali Canon, asana (postural) practices from yoga, and various somatic techniques that can be applied individually in accordance with each person’s needs.

We will explore:

  • How we can find balance in the sitting posture
  • The way we position the pelvis, shape the spine, and hold the carriage of the shoulder girdle and head
  • The cross-legged posture for those who sit on zafus (meditation cushions)
  • Alternate meditation postures that use kneeling benches, chairs, and reclining for zazen

Each class will conclude with a period of meditation.

Recordings:
All course sessions will be recorded, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.
