Author and archivist David Chadwick (best known for his Shunryu Suzuki Roshi biography Crooked Cucumber) will discuss his latest book, Tassajara Stories: A Sort of Memoir/Oral History of the First Zen Buddhist Monastery in the West—The First Year, 1967 alongside Zen priest, master cook, and baker Edward Espe Brown, whose seminal Tassajara Bread Book is being reissued this October. This special 55th Anniversary Edition celebrates the book's influence on artisanal breadbaking.

Retracing their own paths along the sage-lined trail to Tassajara, Chadwick and Brown will recall how the monastery emerged—from Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and Richard Baker, to the first students, the winding road, the neighbors, the mountains and woods, the city, the war, and the counterculture—not apart from the world, but arising within it.

Tassajara Stories is the first in Chadwick's planned three-volume chronicle of those early years. To learn more about his process of remembrance and preservation, read Tova Green’s article in Sangha News Journal: David Chadwick’s Tassajara Stories.
