Four Tuesdays, March 3–March 24, 6–7:30 pm PT

Whether you are new to Sōtō Zen or a longtime practitioner, you are probably familiar with Genjōkōan; it is included weekly among the texts chanted at SFZC’s temples.

Dōgen wrote this text for a lay practitioner named Yō Kōshū, who may have been his shipmate when Dōgen sailed home from China. We might imagine them sitting together on the deck at night, looking at the stars and discussing the Dharma.

In his letter to Yō Kōshū, Dōgen outlines in clear language what it means to actualize the Buddha Dharma and how we can bring forth practice and realize the Dharma. This class will explore the “what” and “how” of practice as Dogen presents it in Genjōkōan, and how his teaching still resonates in contemporary life.

Led by Shinshu Roberts, the class follows her commentary, Meeting the Myriad Things: A Zen Practitioner’s Guide to Dōgen’s Genjōkōan, available in the SFZC Online Store.

Recordings:
All course sessions will be recorded, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.
