Join us for a compelling one-and-a-half-hour dialogue, Exploring Soto and Jodo Shinshu Perspectives, moderated by Abbot Jiryu Rutschman-Byler of the San Francisco Zen Center. This session highlights Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge, who since 2009 not only serves as the resident minister at the Buddhist Church of Oakland, but also as an instructor at the Institute of Buddhist Studies.

Drawing from Abbot Jiryu's profound grounding in Soto Zen and Rev. Bridge’s extensive experience in Jodo Shinshu, the dialogue promises to bridge these distinct but complementary paths. They will discuss critical themes such as awareness, kindness, & appreciation as essential elements in Rev. Bridge’s teachings on Living a Shin Buddhist Life. His approach, characterized by humor and deep spiritual insights, promises to offer a dynamic exploration of how these traditions converge to meet the spiritual needs of contemporary society.

A voice in modern Buddhist discourse, Rev. Bridge previously co-hosted the Dharma Realm podcast with Scott Mitchell, Dean of the Institute of Buddhist Studies, about the inter-related nature of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, Buddhism in the modern world, pop-culture, music, and sci-fi.

This dialogue is an excellent opportunity for those interested in the evolving landscape of American Buddhism and how it continues to respond to the challenges of modern life.
