Four Mondays, 5 – 6:15 pm PT

This class will introduce and explore teachings from the new book by Suzuki Roshi, Becoming Yourself. As the book’s co-editor, together with the late Sojun Mel Weitsman, Abbot Jiryu Rutschman-Byler is intimate with its themes and confident in its deep value for practitioners.

The four class sessions will mirror the sections in the book, taking up examples of Suzuki Roshi’s approach to:

  1. Sitting practice
  2. Everyday life practice
  3. The spirit or attitude of Zen ethics/precepts generally
  4. The sixteen Bodhisattva precepts.

Each class will include a presentation by Jiryu of relevant chapters and themes, along with some reading together from the text and opportunities for questions and Dharma discussion. Participants are encouraged to have a copy of the book on hand during the class. It is available through the SFZC Bookstore and other booksellers.

Recordings:

All course sessions will be recorded, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.
