Description

百八つ梵鐘の先
平和なれ

The great temple bell rings
one hundred eight times—
May there be peace!
   — Mitsu Suzuki

Come ring in the New Year in-person or online with the Green Gulch Farm Sangha!

The evening will begin in the zendo at 8 pm with a formal tea offering made by Green Gulch tea teacher and senior priest Meiya Sōju Wender.

Following the tea offering, participants will practice zazen and kinhin in the zendo (or online) until midnight, with a pause at 10 pm to enjoy a hot rice drink in the dining room or outdoors.

From 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm, following the tea and in parallel with zazen, there will be chanting of the Light of Awareness Sutra in the Wheelwright Center. The sutra text is available here.

The sitting ends at midnight with the chanting of the refuges and the traditional 108 strikes on the Great Bell, ringing in the New Year.

Weather conditions permitting, a bonfire will take place after the sitting, an opportunity to burn traces of the last year and offer our wishes for the next.

Registration is required for in-person attendance. To register, please review the Health & Safety information below and complete the vaccination form, then click the "Register Online" button below to continue. There will be a cap on participants to avoid crowding in the zendo. (Please note there is no overnight option offered this year.)

Online Participation: For those not attending in person, the tea offering 8 – 8:30 pm, the sutra chanting 8:30 – 10:30 pm, and zazen 10:30 pm – 12 am will be streamed on the SFZC Online Zendo. No registration is required for online participation.
