Description

All the happiness there is in this world comes from thinking about others, and all the suffering comes from preoccupation with yourself.
―Shantideva

This day-long retreat will identify, share, and practice with the tools of both Soto Zen and 12-Step recovery in order to enhance our capacity for health, wellness and happiness.

We will study the words of Shantideva to find ways to enhance our interconnection as people in recovery walking together on Buddha’s Path. It is understood that we live in challenging times. It is also understood that achieving and maintaining sobriety, abstinence, mental wellness, and emotional balance are serious endeavors. While those challenges and hindrances are real, if we work together, we can bring balance and, yes, JOY to our lives.

The Big Book says “we are not a glum lot – if newcomers could see no joy or happiness in our existence, they would not want it.” Our Buddhists practice, also a serious endeavor, invites us to experience and share joy, too. The Buddha said “Set your heart on doing good. Do it over and over again, and you will be filled with joy."

This retreat will offer sitting and walking meditation, joyful movement, creative and joy-based expression, journaling, walks on the farm and at the beach, and other healing techniques. We will be invited to get in touch with our bodies as integral components of spiritual practice, recovery, and healing.

All bodies and minds are welcome. Activities will be designed which include and respect all the bodies who are present and move them both safely and joyfully. Please contact the instructor if you have ideas to assure your safety, participation, and bliss.

Please bring a bag lunch and a water bottle. No other supplies are necessary.
