Description

Zen Precepts in Daily Life

Embark on a timely exploration of what it means to lead a good life through the lens of Zen Buddhist teachings and practices. This practice period, rooted in study of the 16 Bodhisattva precepts, delves into the ethical complexities of present-day daily life, particularly against the backdrop of polarizing views and narratives prevalent in today's world. It offers a blend of historical and contemporary reflections to provide valuable insights into fostering mindfulness, intentionality, compassion, and ethical decision-making.

Due to the renovations at City Center, this practice period is only offered in the Online/Visitor format. Visit City Center for practice period events, or participate online, as you choose.

Deadline for registration is January 28.

About the Winter 2024 Practice Period

You may attend daily meditation, Dharma talks, and classes either onsite at City Center or online as you prefer. All events at City Center will be in the zendo, accessed through the Laguna Street door, which will open 15 minutes before each event.

The practice period will begin with an orientation, available both onsite and livestreamed, on Wednesday, January 24, at 7:30 pm PT.

Included in the practice period:

Dōshin Mako Voelkel will teach a class on the practice period topic, both online and onsite, on Mondays, January 29 – March 25, 7 – 8:30 pm PT (class will not meet on February 19). The class is included in the practice period fee.

There are two Saturday one-day sittings on January 27 and February 17, and a concluding four-day sesshin March 27 – 30. The online option for these sittings is included in the practice period fee. If you wish to attend the one-day sittings or four-day retreat onsite, you must register for each separately. Because of the renovations, the onsite sittings will be held at the nearby Unity Church of San Francisco; more information about this will follow.
