Description

San Francisco Zen Center welcomes Butoh dancer Mayako Okura from Japan for two evenings of performance, Tada Ima (Just Now)

Mayako will be joined by Bay Area Butoh dancers as well.

In the deepest depth of the body.
In the depths of myself,
and far beyond,
and beneath this earth.
For those who have lived with me all along,
even before I was born.

“Tadaima. Kaerimashita.”
(“I’m home. I’ve returned.”)

In Japan,
these are the words you say
when you come back home.

But tadaima can also mean
just now—
this very moment.

And kaerimashita carries many layers of meaning:
to return, to come back,
to hatch, to return to the earth—
even the word frog, which echoes kaeru (“to return”).

Tadaima,
just—now,
kaerimashita.

Return to the earth.
A shell breaks—life hatches.
From the soil, a frog emerges.
