Six Wednesdays, 5 – 6:30 pm PT

This six-week course will explore Zazen (the practice of just sitting) through the teachings of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. Known for his unique ability to present both the fundamental and profound aspects of this lifelong practice, the founder of San Francisco Zen Center has become the most beloved and enduring figure introducing Soto Zen Buddhism to Western audiences. His accessible approach to sitting and community practice has continued to inspire and invite practitioners for over 50 years.

Students worldwide have cited Suzuki Roshi's Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind and Not Always So as key inspirations for their practice. His ability to listen and appreciate the challenges facing western students make the basics of Zen practice exceptionally clear and relatable. Suzuki Roshi's teachings are infused with the joy, appreciation, and insight of Buddhist practice, resonating deeply.

The focus of these classes will be on the practice of zazen: covering posture, breathing, and attention. Guided by Suzuki Roshi's teachings, we'll delve beyond the basics to integrate sitting practice into daily life, fostering a spirit of inquiry, nurturing compassion, and engaging fully with everything around us. Embracing the principle of "beginner's mind," these sessions are designed to be accessible to everyone, requiring no prior experience with Buddhism or Zen meditation.
