Six Tuesdays, October 14–November 18, 5–6:30 pm PT
This six-week course will explore Zen practice through the teachings of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. Known for his unique ability to present both the fundamental and profound aspects of this lifelong practice, the founder of San Francisco Zen Center has become one of the most beloved and enduring figures to introduce Soto Zen Buddhism to Western audiences. His accessible approach to sitting (called zazen) and community practice has continued to inspire students for over 60 years.
Students worldwide have cited Suzuki Roshi’s Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind and Not Always So as key inspirations for their practice. His ability to listen and appreciate the challenges facing Western students makes his presentation of Zen exceptionally clear and relatable. Suzuki Roshi’s teachings are infused with the joy, appreciation, and insight of a lifetime devoted to Buddhist practice.
The focus of these classes will be Basic Buddhism: Its Practice and Appreciation. The specific topics we will consider are: Approaching Practice, Mistakes, Faith, Kindness, Respect, and Transience. Guided by Suzuki Roshi’s teachings, we’ll delve beyond the basics to integrate sitting practice into daily life—fostering a spirit of inquiry, nurturing compassion, and engaging fully with everything around us.
Embracing the principle of "beginner's mind," these sessions are designed to be accessible to everyone, requiring no prior experience with Buddhism or Zen meditation.
We recommend that participants have copies of each book: Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, and Not Always So. We will be referring to these collections throughout the course, and recommend students spend time with each volume before the class if possible.
Recordings:
All course sessions will be recorded, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.
