Join us for a thought-provoking online event with Vanessa R. Sasson and Jisan Tova Green, as they delve into Sasson's latest book, The Gathering: A Story of the First Buddhist Women (Equinox 2023). This session will provide us with a unique opportunity to explore the history of the first Buddhist women and their journey toward ordination.

After years of meticulous research, Sasson reimagines the lives of some of the women who feature in the early literature and brings them to life in her book. The Gathering invites us to envision the early Buddhist women’s perspectives and experiences, reflect on their resilience, and imagine the friendships that may have emerged in the process. Sasson’s narrative, built on historical elements, encourages us to consider the enduring influence and contributions of these pioneering women.

Event Format:

  1. Introduction: Tova will introduce Vanessa and invite her to share her insights into the story.
  2. Discussion: Tova and Vanessa will engage in a deep dialogue, addressing key questions about character depth, the balance of narrative and historical accuracy, relevance to contemporary womens’ issues, and personal connections
  3. Open Discussion: A moderated segment where attendees can engage and share their questions, experiences, and thoughts.

This event is more than a book discussion; it's a journey into the heart of early Buddhism, acknowledging the struggles and triumphs of women who shaped its legacy. Whether you're deeply immersed in Buddhist studies or newly curious, this dialogue brings to life to a pivotal chapter of Buddhist history.
