“One should cultivate a boundless heart in all directions ... Whenever one is awake, may one stay with this recollection; this is called the best and most sublime way of dwelling in this world.” —Metta Sutta
The Brahmaviharas, or “sublime attitudes,” are the Buddha’s primary heart teachings—the ones that connect most directly with our desire for true happiness. The four Brahmavihāras are kindness (metta), compassion (karuna), appreciative joy (mudita), and equanimity (upekkha). These interrelated “divine abodes” or “immeasurable” attitudes of love are more than a list of positive emotions. Indeed, when practiced and realized together they become the very landscape and embodiment of liberation and enable us to be active participants in the healing and awakening of our world.
In this five-week class we’ll experientially explore the four Brahmaviharas individually and as a whole. Through readings, group exercises and discussions, guided meditations and weekly reflections, we will actively take up the practice of these sublime attitudes with the intention to manifest them on a personal, interpersonal, and societal level.
