Jane Hirshfield

Jane Hirshfield has been described in The New York Times Magazine as “writing some of the most important poems in the world today.” Jane’s most recent, tenth collection of poems is The Asking: New & Selected Poems (Knopf, 2023). Other books include two now-classic collections of essays on how poems do their work and four volumes collecting the work of world poets from the deep past. Her work appears regularly in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Poetry, Orion, Tricycle, and The Best American Poems. Lay ordained in Soto Zen in 1979, founder of the activist traveling and online project Poets for Science, and a 2026 Visiting Fellow at Harvard Divinity School’s Center for Global Religions, she was elected in 2019 into The American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
