Vice President – Operations


Position Summary

Reporting to the President of SFZC, the Vice President role involves general management, planning, coordination, decision-making, and support of SFZC Operation Units and Support Departments. The Operation Units are: Programs, Development, Hospitality, and Other Business and Enterprises (OBE). The Support Departments are: Operations/IT, Marketing/Communications, and Facilities. This position carries considerable responsibility and an even greater opportunity to assist San Francisco Zen Center’s mission of sharing the Dharma.

Some Basic Qualifications and Work-Practice Experience Required

  • Candidate must be a mature and balanced practitioner
  • Residential practice at SFZC or SFZC employee for at least 2 years
  • Preferably one year at Tassajara
  • Preferably a former Shuso
  • Experience in leadership, administrative, and managerial positions, either at SFZC or elsewhere
  • Preferably is familiar with and has a relationship with two or three of SFZC’s three temples

Corporate Secretary


Position Summary

The Secretary reports to the SFZC President and, as determined by the President, the Secretary will function as a team-member in collaboration with the other SFZC Officers and Directors to implement the goals, objectives and strategies of the SFZC organizational plan. The Secretary hosts and coordinates the scheduling and communications functions for various SFZC meetings. The Secretary attends and keeps minutes for the Board, Officers and Directors, and other committees as decided by the Board Chair and President.

Some Basic Qualifications and Work-Practice Experience Required

  • Candidate must be a mature and balanced practitioner, with preferably five years or more residential practice at SFZC
  • Preferably practiced at two or more SFZC temples, with at least one year at Tassajara
  • Would have held at least one, if not more, of the SFZC Senior Staff positions
  • Helpful to have had some experience in leadership, administrative, and managerial positions at SFZC
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
