The Autumn Butoh offering this year brings together two Butoh dancers that have danced on our stage many times. This is the first time they will meet and perform on the same evenings.

Sandra Soto comes north, from Guadalajara, Mexico...and Himiko (Tomoko) travels east, from Maui, Hawaii, both brought to San Francisco by the autumn winds.

Solo and together, an Atemporal Connection.

Atemporal explores the unfolding of the body and sound as fields of vibration that expand the perception of space. Through intuition, movement reveals multiple states of presence in which memory, matter, and resonance converge within a single event.

The original sound composition by Horacio Cicero Din, developed through microtonal research and experimental software under the project Din is Noise, engages with the dance as a living organism. Together, these two dimensions create a constantly transforming perceptual space, where the boundaries between body, sound, and time gradually dissolve.

Drawing from the phenomenology of Butoh, Atemporal offers a sensory experience in which linear time is suspended, giving way to an expanded present and revealing multiple possibilities of the body and perception.

Connection

Connection is a Butoh and calligraphy performance exploring the invisible threads that bind us—to one another, to ourselves, and to something beyond ourselves.

The piece begins with a red thread, carefully gathered and held close to the body. As it slowly unravels, the thread becomes entangled with the dancer, transforming from something ordered and contained into something unpredictable and alive.

Through the body, the thread, and the act of calligraphy, Connection explores the tension between holding on and letting go, separation and belonging, control and surrender. Rather than seeking to untangle everything, Connection asks what might happen when we allow ourselves to remain inside the complexity.

Perhaps connection is not something we create.

Perhaps it is something that has always been there.
