Six Wednesdays, March 17–April 21, 5:30–7:00 pm PT

Treatise on Awakening Mahayana Faith is text of unknown origin. It appeared in China in the sixth century, around the time of Bodhidharma, and quickly became very influential for all schools of Chinese and Japanese Buddha-Dharma, especially Huayan, Tiantai, and Chan (Zen).

It harmonizes the Indian Yogachara (mind-only) and Tathagatagarbha (buddha-nature) teachings into a new understanding based on “one mind in two aspects”: undivided suchness and distorted samsara, from which the whole world of experience arises.

Over six weeks, Kokyo Henkel will explore the treatise’s distinctive East Asian understanding of the Mahayana (great vehicle), including its teachings on faith or trust, practice, buddha-nature, and the relationship between suchness and samsara.
