Practice Center: City Center
Date / Time: April 24, 2026 / 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Description

San Francisco Zen Center welcomes Butoh dancer Mayako Okura from Japan for two evenings of performance, Tada Ima (Just Now)

Mayako will be joined by Bay Area Butoh dancers as well.

In the deepest depth of the body.
In the depths of myself,
and far beyond,
and beneath this earth.
For those who have lived with me all along,
even before I was born.

“Tadaima. Kaerimashita.”
(“I’m home. I’ve returned.”)

In Japan,
these are the words you say
when you come back home.

But tadaima can also mean
just now—
this very moment.

And kaerimashita carries many layers of meaning:
to return, to come back,
to hatch, to return to the earth—
even the word frog, which echoes kaeru (“to return”).

Tadaima,
just—now,
kaerimashita.

Return to the earth.
A shell breaks—life hatches.
From the soil, a frog emerges.

What returns
into what?
From where,
to where?
To the place
I was returning to
before I was human.

Go safely.

Welcome home.

Mayako Okura

Mayako Okura

Mayako Okura is a Butoh dancer based in Japan. With the theme of “living with innocence, from moment to moment,” she explores improvised Butoh as a direct encounter with the self—allowing dance to emerge from the deep connection between body and consciousness. Her works arise from simple, minimal movements, quietly awakening the audience’s imagination and inviting an awareness of immediate presence.

Diana Soline

Diana Soline

Diana Soline is a Ukrainian-Russian artist, painter, musician, and dancer whose work flows between visual art, sound, and embodied performance. Her practice explores the body as a living canvas, inviting deep presence, shadow integration, and the awakening of embodied awareness.

Delana Motter

Delana Motter

Delana Motter (She/Her) is a movement artist, professional creative, and student of the Dharma and wisdom traditions. Her art is irreverently reverent ;) informed by Japanese Butoh, sacred theater, somatic embodiment, and ecstatic play on global underground dance floors.
