SUMMARY:Dancing in the Dark Fields of Illness & Pain\, Online 8/22–10/3
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nSix Saturdays\, August 22–October 3\, 1–2:30 pm PTClass does not meet on September 12 \nThis is an online introductory class for people who are working with the fierce teachers of chronic illness or chronic pain. In this six-part interactive class we will share our stories and explore practices that may be useful on the journey. \nZenshin Florence Caplow\, who will be teaching the class\, has “danced” with auto-immune illness for the last two decades\, including rheumatoid arthritis. She is a Zen priest and teacher\, co-author of Tend to Your Spirit: Mindful Living With Chronic Illness\, and a Unitarian Universalist minister. She is also co-editor of The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women. \nOptional readings will be shared during the class. To prepare\, students may wish to read Turning Suffering Inside Out by Darlene Cohen and/or How to Live Well With Chronic Pain and Illness\, by Toni Bernhard. Please see Zenshin Florence Caplow’s essay on “Dancing in the Dark Fields” as well as her Dharma talk on this subject below. \n\nThis talk was given at Beginner’s Mind Temple by Zenshin Florence Caplow. Zenshin offers stories and teachings from her life as both a Zen practitioner and person with chronic illness\, and readings from her new book\, Tend to Your Spirit: Mindful Living With Chronic Illness. Recorded on Saturday\, November 1\, 2025. \nTestimonials: \n\nChronic suffering is impossible to ignore\, often excruciating and isolating. Florence Caplow’s Dancing in the Fields of Chronic Pain workshops\, with her cheerful and enlightened guidance and the open participation of others\, have consistently provided me with refuge\, inspiration\, and comfort. These workshops are subtle\, magical\, gentle\, and transformative. They embody wisdom in service of compassion. It feels less like practice and more like a rally\, opening our hearts. Thanks to everyone participating and to Zenshin Florence; it has been like a prayer flag of compassion touching my countenance.—Barry E. \n\n\nIn this monthly online gathering\, there is no ‘othering.’ The open and trusting atmosphere that Zenshin and the group co-create is invaluable. Sharing my experiences with chronic illness in this supportive environment brings a sense of release and companionship\, without falling into self-pity. The Zoom format allows us to connect\, forming a familiar\, supportive group without needing to be physically present. Zenshin’s integration of Buddhist teachings with the experience of illness has deepened my understanding of impermanence and dealing with suffering. There’s room to feel lost and be carried\, to be grateful and to complain\, to share and to learn. ‘There is no I\, there is only a we’ has profoundly impacted me\, ending the isolation of chronic illness. The course is truly a gift that nourishes me and reminds me that I am never alone.—Monika R. \n\nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Deep Rest In Zen And Yoga: Learning To Let Go And Be Upright\, CC 8/20–8/23
DESCRIPTION:Deep Rest is a skill that we all need more of and that we can develop. With regular practice\, we can learn how to allow mind and body to readily transition from their everyday activated (sympathetic) state to a parasympathetic mode. Deep Rest is a state of body and mind that is mentally and physically in repose\, one that brings balance and ease to our experience of life. Entering Deep Rest\, one experiences a profound stillness that is sustained without strain\, one that supports the cultivation of meditative tranquility. \nIn this Deep Rest Retreat\, we will practice letting go in Restorative Yoga postures\, expand our breathing practice in pranayama (yogic breathing)\, and explore how to support deep rest as we practice the posture of upright sitting.

SUMMARY:100 Light Years of Solitude\, Butoh Performance\, at Yugen Theatre\, 8/15 – Waitlist Only

Butoh\, a dance of metamorphosis\, helps me to explore this imaginary world\, and make something invisible visible.” \nNote about location:This performance takes place at Yugen Theater/ Noh Space 2840 Mariposa St\, San Francisco\, CA 94110 \nThis event has reached full capacity. SUMMARY:The Reset Retreat: Bringing the Joy of Dharma to Your Work and Life\, GGF 8/12–8/14
DESCRIPTION:The Reset Retreat offers an immersive\, device-free environment to help you cultivate the qualities of mind and communication skills that lead to well-being and success—at work\, with money\, and in life. Given how much of our lives we spend working\, this retreat is designed to bring joy\, purpose\, and flow to the moments that shape so much of who we are. \nThe retreat spans just 48 hours—short enough to fit your schedule\, yet long enough for a real shift. Past participants have described the experience as “timeless.” Set in the breathtaking Marin Headlands just north of San Francisco at Green Gulch Farm\, you’ll have space to truly unplug\, reset your nervous system\, and discover the clarity and wisdom that emerge from stillness. \nThis is an invitation to stop reacting to your life and start living it. To shift from busyness as a default to intentionally cultivating your most important asset: your presence. \nOver the course of the retreat\, you’ll hike through the headlands\, share organic meals\, practice meditation techniques designed for real life\, move between collective silence and catalytic conversation\, experience a restorative sound bath\, and walk to the ocean. \nWe welcome those new to meditation as well as those with decades of experience.
