SUMMARY:Saturday One-Day Sitting\, CC 11/7
DESCRIPTION:This page is for in-person at City Center sesshin registration. If you want to join online\, register for the Saturday One-Day Sitting\, Online 11/7. \nOne-day sittings offer traditional Soto Zen all-day meditation practice. In order to understand the nature of our formal retreats and to be clear about the details of the practice\, please review a typical one-day sitting schedule. We ask those who attend one-day sittings to commit to participating in the complete schedule. \nWe will be using the traditional Zen form of oryoki for eating some of our meals in the zendo. While meals are included as part of the one-day sitting\, you will need an oryoki set to participate. You may either bring your own set\, purchase one ($100)\, or rent a set for the day ($10). \nPrerequisitesAll One-Day participants are asked to have at least participated in one SFZC half-day sitting\, attended Zazen Instruction and Zendo Forms Instruction at City Center\, and have received training in oryoki or commit to participating in the Oryoki Training on the evening before the One-Day Sit at 5:00 pm in the City Center dining room. \nIf you have any questions regarding the schedule\, guidelines\, or your eligibility for the One-Day Sitting\, please consult with the head of the meditation hall (ino) at ccino@sfzc.org before completing your registration. \nThis sesshin is included with the 2026 Fall Practice Period at City Center\, but is open to registration by those not participating in the practice period. If you already registered for the practice period as a resident\, there is no need to register for this sesshin. \nThe registration deadline is October 30. \nComplete the registration form

SUMMARY:The Noble Eightfold Path\, Online 11/7–11/14
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nTwo Saturdays\, November 7 and 14\, 9:00–11:00 am PT  \n\n“Now this\, monks\, is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering: it is this Noble Eightfold Path.” — Buddha \n\nThe heart of Buddha’s teaching is expressed in the Four Noble Truths and the practical application of this teaching is found in the Noble Eightfold Path. The Noble Eightfold Path is what brings the Four Noble Truths to life.  \nAt times of great uncertainty\, anxiety and confusion\, including the unfolding of this election season in our country\, the Noble Eightfold Path can guide us to experience in our own lives the purpose of the Buddha’s teachings: liberation from suffering. \nOften referred to as Buddha’s medicine\, the path consists of eight “wise” elements: wise view\, intention\, speech\, action\, livelihood\, effort\, mindfulness\, and concentration. To journey through all eight components of the Noble Path is to travel toward a life of understanding (prajna/wisdom)\, skillfulness (sila/ethics) and insightful concentration (samadhi/meditation). \nTogether we’ll explore the meaning of each element of the Noble Eightfold Path\, learning how to apply them to our daily lives and practice so that we might embody this Path for the benefit of all beings—ourselves and others. We will pay special attention to the personal\, societal\, and global challenges we are currently experiencing\, highlighting the practical application of this ancient wisdom. \nMaterials will be sent out in advance of each class. While purchase is not necessary\, the teachers will reference the following books\, in addition to other resources: \n\nThe Heart of Buddha’s Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh\nNoble Truths\, Noble Path: The Heart Essence of the Buddha’s Original Teachings by Bhikkhu Bodhi\n\nPlease join Diane and Cynthia in this study of Buddha’s essential\, timeless teaching. \nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Finding Ease: A Zen and Mindfulness Approach to Anxiety\, GGF 11/8
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 8\, 9:30 am–4:30 pm\, in the Wheelwright Center \n\nTo be you is enough\, you know…– Shunryu Suzuki Roshi \n\nAnxiety and our aversion to it are too often accompanied by reactivity and actions that worsen how we feel. We worry. We criticize and judge ourselves. We suffer. Such thoughts\, and the emotions they trigger\, can become overwhelming\, and can feel relentless. \nOur focus during this workshop will be on our direct experience. We will practice uncovering the natural state of a quieted mind\, slowing down enough to see what is actually happening when we describe ourselves as anxious. As we cultivate the opportunity to be with what is truly happening with awareness and clarity\, we can respond to difficulties with consciousness\, ease\, and new choices\, rather than with reactivity\, which can make things worse. \nWith a foundation of the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths\, this Zen and Mindfulness retreat features guided meditations and related tools. We will also integrate psychotherapeutic strategies\, an approach recognized and supported by leading neuroscience and psychological research. Our intention is to guide participants in creating their individual Finding Ease toolbox. \nThere will be time for participants to explore beautiful Green Gulch Farm\, nestled in a quiet and lush valley that is a 45-minute walk from Stinson Beach and the ocean. And those who are interested are welcome to meditate with the Green Gulch community. \nFinding Ease is appropriate for those who are new to meditation as well as experienced meditators.

SUMMARY:Deeper Rest: Exploring Relaxation in Daily Life\, Online 11/8–11/29
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nFour Sundays\, November 8–29\, 2:30–4:00 pm PT  \nDeep Rest is a skill that we all need. With regular practice\, we can learn how to allow mind and body to easily transition from their usual activated (sympathetic) state to a relaxed  (parasympathetic) mode. This is a state of body and mind that is mentally and physically restorative\, one that brings balance and ease. Deep Rest is repose—a profound stillness of bodymind that is sustained without strain\, that cultivates refreshment and ease. It is the basis of meditative absorption. \nThis series builds on the foundation introduced in Deep Rest: Learning to Let Go\, while also welcoming newcomers who wish to cultivate a deeper relationship with rest and relaxation. \nIn Deeper Rest\, we will continue the practice of letting go in restorative yoga postures\, expand our breathing practice into pranayama (yogic breathing)\, and explore Buddhist teachings on the practice of tranquility on and off the cushion. \nPlease wear comfortable\, non-restrictive clothing and\, if possible\, have the following props available: \n\nYoga mat\nTwo blankets\nYoga strap\nBolster or firm cushion\nEye covering\nYour usual meditation support (cushion\, chair\, or bench)\n\nRecordings:\nAll course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Heart Practices of a Bodhisattva: The Six Paramitas\, CC/Online 10/5–11/23
DESCRIPTION:Use this page to register for the class only. \nIf you would like to register for the full Fall Practice Period\, there is a Residential option or an Online/Commuter option. \nEight Mondays\, October 5–November 23 | 7:30–9:00 pm \nThe Six Paramitas or ‘perfections’ are foundational Buddhist practices that guide individuals on the path to awakening. When practiced deeply\, each of these paramitas\, or far-reaching attitudes\, helps one transcend personal suffering and support others on their journey toward wisdom and peace. According to Mahayana Buddhism\, a bodhisattva (“Buddha-to-be”) naturally follows and embodies these six transcendental virtues: Generosity (Dana)\, Ethical Conduct (Sila)\, Patience/Forbearance (Kshanti)\, Diligence/Heroic Effort (Virya)\, Concentration/Meditation (Dhyana)\, and Wisdom (Prajna). Indeed\, these virtues are considered the heart practices of a Bodhisattva. \nIn this eight-week class led by Abbot Tenzen David Zimmerman\, we’ll explore (through lectures\, readings\, group discussions\, and weekly reflections) each of the six paramitas and ways to cultivate and manifest them in our lives to effect transformation at the personal\, interpersonal\, and societal levels. We will also study examples of the perfections from Shakyamuni Buddha’s own previous lives\, drawn from the Jataka tales. \nYou can attend class in-person at City Center or online via Zoom.  \nNote: The October 12 class will be online for everyone due to a temple-observed holiday. \nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Meditation Training 1.5: Working with the Five Hindrances\, Online 10/28-11/18
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nFour Wednesdays\, 6:00–7:30 pm PT \n\n“For Zen students\, a weed is a treasure.”—Shunryu Suzuki Roshi \n\nAre you having difficulty in meditation or concentrating in daily life? Do you find yourself obsessing over love or hate? Falling asleep\, feeling anxious\, restless\, or agitated more often than calm while meditating? Doubting yourself or your practice? \nThe Five Hindrances are common mind-heart states that can impede the development of concentration and mindfulness. In this class\, we will explore classic and contemporary teachings on how to become aware of and work with these states\, as well as how to cultivate their antidotes. \nAs this is a study and practice class\, specific texts\, meditation instructions\, and off-the-cushion practices will be shared and can be used to work with the Hindrances between classes. \nHaving the skills to be at ease in the midst of the Hindrances can enrich your meditation\, making it easier to bring the fruits of your practice into everyday life. \nNo prerequisite is required. If you do not currently have an established practice\, we strongly encourage first taking Meditation Training: Establishing a Meditation Practice in Four Short Weeks\, offered September 30–October 18. \nRecommended ReadingUnhindered by Gil Fronsdal (not required) \nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Sandokai's Teaching of Wholeness\, Online 10/29–11/19
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nFour Thursdays\, October 29–November 19\, 6:00 pm–8:00 pm PT \nHow can an 8th-century Zen poem illuminate some of the deepest challenges of the 21st century? The Sandokai (“Harmony of Difference and Equality”) takes up one of humanity’s oldest and most enduring questions: How can reality be both one and many—unified yet diverse\, ordered yet ever-changing?  \nThe Sandokai invites us beyond the habitual oppositional thinking that shapes and limits our lives: self and other\, unity and diversity\, inclusion and exclusion\, certainty and uncertainty\, harmony and conflict. For more than twelve centuries\, it has expressed the heart of the Soto Zen understanding and practice of total dynamic inclusion\, wholeness and fundamental equality within difference. \nIn this four-session online class\, we will explore the origins and enduring significance of the Sandokai\, its influence on the teachings of Eihei Dogen\, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and the practices of the Soto Zen school\, and its continuous relevance in a world marked by conflict\, uncertainty\, fragmentation\, and suffering.  \nThrough careful reading\, discussion\, and application to contemporary life circumstances\, we will explore how this remarkable poem offers “hidden” practical guidance for living and practicing with wisdom and compassion\, in ways that can heal both fracture and erasure. \nAlong the way\, we will occasionally draw upon the Western alchemical understanding of the coniunctio—the transformative union of apparent opposites and opening into a fuller and more vital expression of wholeness—as a complimentary way of appreciating the processes of integration\, maturation\, and awakening that a sustained Zen practice can foster.  \nRather than interpreting the Sandokai through another tradition\, reflections upon the coniunctio will simply offer additional language and perspective for recognizing a transformative movement that practitioners in both the East and West have experienced and described in their own distinct ways over the centuries. \nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Zazenkai Series\, CC 10/9–11/20
DESCRIPTION:Fridays\, October 9–November 20 \nA series of half-day sittings led by senior students at City Center will take place every Friday morning from October 9 through November 20 in the zendo. Everyone is welcome to drop-in\, no registration required. \nZazenkai\, CC 10/9\nZazenkai\, CC 10/16\nZazenkai\, CC 10/23\nZazenkai\, CC 11/13\nZazenkai\, CC 11/20 \nZazen is the practice of sitting with awareness and experiencing whatever arises. Throughout the history of Zen\, the practice of zazen has been considered the primary agent of awakening. As Dogen Zenji declared\, before bowing\, offering incense or chanting Buddha’s name\, the practice of zazen reveals and expresses awakening. With this in mind\, zazenkai is a period of time dedicated to zazen with minimal traditional formalities. \nThese sittings are suitable for both beginners and experienced sitters. There will be instruction in the details of posture\, breath\, and establishing the mental disposition of experiencing whatever arises. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions about one’s practice. \nThere will be scheduled periods of sitting and walking\, with the option of continuing to sit through the walking meditation if desired. \nPrior Instruction: Although general instruction for meditation is included in these events\, it is recommended that participants attend public Zazen Meditation Instruction beforehand\, which is available in-person on select Saturdays at 8:40 am at 300 Page Street.

SUMMARY:Jizo Peace Project: Clay Making Gathering for Remembrance and Peace\, CC 11/13
DESCRIPTION:Jizo Bodhisattva is the fearless guardian with deep vow to enter all hell realms to help. They are unwavering in their steadfast resolve and compassionate presence. \nThe Jizo Peace Project arose as a response to the great tragedy in Gaza and Israel. The project’s intention is to honor the children who have perished since October of 2023 in Gaza and Israel. More than 19\,000 children have lost their lives. \nThrough the meditative and intimate act of working with clay\, we create Jizo bodhisattvas who will become part of public exhibits and peace sites\, offering spaces for reflection\, mourning\, and hope. Our gatherings conclude with a simple ritual to honor the lives of these children by reading names. We create a shared space of warmth and care together\, where there is an opportunity to tend to our own hearts while taking part in love in action. \nPlease join us. There is no need for prior experience with clay. Donations are appreciated to cover the materials and expenses for the peace project.

SUMMARY:Zenefit 2026: A Night of Sonic Exploration and Deep Listening\, GAMH 11/13
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 13\, 2026\nDoors open at 6:00 pm\nEvent starts at 7:00 pm and ends by 11:00 pm \nGreat American Music Hall\n859 O’Farrell St\, San Francisco \nIn November of 1966\, San Francisco Zen Center launched a series of fundraisers to help purchase Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. For nearly a year\, local musicians\, poets\, thinkers\, and spiritual leaders held events across the Bay Area to help raise enough money to purchase the old hot springs resort located deep in the Ventana Wilderness that would soon become our beloved monastery. \nIt’s in this spirit\, exactly sixty years later\, that we bring back the Zenefit to support Tassajara in this time of challenging fires and critical infrastructure repairs. \nIn a single\, magical evening\, Zenefit 2026 will bring together experimental musicians\, poets\, historians\, and spoken-word and visual artists for an immersive night of live performance and unexpected collaboration. Psychedelic folk\, improvisational soundscapes\, beat poetry\, meditative spoken word\, and a liquid light show—all set against the ornate backdrop of the Great American Music Hall. \nAll proceeds support San Francisco Zen Center and the Tassajara Fire Recovery Fund\, helping sustain the future of practice and community at Tassajara. \n$60 General Admission\n$160 VIP Balcony Seating \nGet Your Tickets!\n \nFeaturing \n\nDevendra Banhart (DJ set) Singer\, songwriter\, visual artist\, and unique voice in contemporary psychedelic folk.\nYogetsu & Dambi Japanese beatboxer and Zen Buddhist monk collaborates with a contemporary sonic artist incorporating ancient contemplative traditions.\nDennis McNally Author\, historian\, and former archivist and publicist for the Grateful Dead.\nColleen Morton Busch Bay Area poet and author of Smolder and Fire Monks: Zen Mind Meets Wildfire.\nBorn I New York based spoken-word and rap artist\, musician\, author\, Zen priest and meditation teacher.\nChuck Gould An original member of the Diggers and photographer who documented San Francisco’s 1960s counterculture.\nRoger Hillyard Pioneer of 1960’s San Francisco psychedelic liquid light shows\, he creates immersive visual environments through handmade analog techniques.\nLonely Parrots San Francisco queer folk-pop duo Michael Martinez and Max Embers\, known for their harmonies and acoustic sound.\nBen Gustin Northern California musician and former SFZC resident whose “Zen Buddhist Campfire Songs” began during his time at Tassajara.\nAvatamsaka Collective describes their latest album as a Post Punk Buddhist Gospel Rock Opera Sing-a-long. Combining lush harmony and cinematic soundscapes\, the record tells the story of the Buddha’s defeat of Mara under the Bodhi Tree.\nMarc Lesser Zen teacher\, author\, former Tassajara director\, and mindfulness educator in the SF Bay Area.\nAdditional artists to be announced. Check back for updates!\n\n  \n\nThe Story of Zenefit \nZenefit has its roots in a remarkable moment in San Francisco history. \nOn November 13\, 1966\, San Francisco Zen Center launched a fundraising campaign to purchase Tassajara Hot Springs and establish a mountain monastery. Musicians\, poets\, artists\, and members of the city’s emerging counterculture came together to help make it happen. A benefit concert at the Avalon Ballroom featured the Grateful Dead\, Big Brother and the Holding Company\, Quicksilver Messenger Service\, and others. Additional benefits and gatherings happened for many months following. See this wonderful collection of old benefit posters on the Cuke.com website for details. \nNovember 13\, 2026 (exactly 60 years later) Zenefit returns in that same spirit of connection—where music\, art\, practice\, and community meet. One night. One legendary room. A collision of sound\, poetry\, improvisation\, and contemplative practice to support Tassajara’s recovery. \n  \n  \n  \n\n
