SUMMARY:I Am a Part of Infinity: The Spiritual Journey of Albert Einstein\, CC 9/19
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free book event with Kieran Fox\, MD PhD\, author of I Am a Part of Infinity: The Spiritual Journey of Albert Einstein. Kieran is a physician-scientist at the University of California SF\, where his research centers on the neural mechanisms and therapeutic potential of meditation practices and psychedelic medicines. \nAlbert Einstein remains renowned around the world for revolutionizing our understanding of the cosmos\, but very few realize that the celebrated scientist had a deep spiritual side.  \nI Am a Part of Infinity offers the first in-depth exploration of Einstein’s spirituality\, showing how he drew on a dazzling diversity of thinkers—from Pythagoras to Plato\, Schopenhauer to Spinoza\, the Upanishads to Mahatma Gandhi—to create a novel system where mysticism met mathematics\, reality was revered\, and the human mind was honored as a mirror of the infinite. Einstein asked us to commune with the cosmos\, to treat every living creature with compassion\, to channel the power that permeated all things and put it to use for pure purposes.

SUMMARY:Dancing in the Dark Fields of Illness & Pain\, Online 8/22–10/3
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nSix Saturdays\, August 22–October 3\, 1–2:30 pm PTClass does not meet on September 12 \nThis is an online introductory class for people who are working with the fierce teachers of chronic illness or chronic pain. In this six-part interactive class we will share our stories and explore practices that may be useful on the journey. \nZenshin Florence Caplow\, who will be teaching the class\, has “danced” with auto-immune illness for the last two decades\, including rheumatoid arthritis. She is a Zen priest and teacher\, co-author of Tend to Your Spirit: Mindful Living With Chronic Illness\, and a Unitarian Universalist minister. She is also co-editor of The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women. \nOptional readings will be shared during the class. To prepare\, students may wish to read Turning Suffering Inside Out by Darlene Cohen and/or How to Live Well With Chronic Pain and Illness\, by Toni Bernhard. Please see Zenshin Florence Caplow’s essay on “Dancing in the Dark Fields” as well as her Dharma talk on this subject below. \n\nThis talk was given at Beginner’s Mind Temple by Zenshin Florence Caplow. Zenshin offers stories and teachings from her life as both a Zen practitioner and person with chronic illness\, and readings from her new book\, Tend to Your Spirit: Mindful Living With Chronic Illness. Recorded on Saturday\, November 1\, 2025. \nTestimonials: \n\nChronic suffering is impossible to ignore\, often excruciating and isolating. Florence Caplow’s Dancing in the Fields of Chronic Pain workshops\, with her cheerful and enlightened guidance and the open participation of others\, have consistently provided me with refuge\, inspiration\, and comfort. These workshops are subtle\, magical\, gentle\, and transformative. They embody wisdom in service of compassion. It feels less like practice and more like a rally\, opening our hearts. Thanks to everyone participating and to Zenshin Florence; it has been like a prayer flag of compassion touching my countenance.—Barry E. \n\n\nIn this monthly online gathering\, there is no ‘othering.’ The open and trusting atmosphere that Zenshin and the group co-create is invaluable. Sharing my experiences with chronic illness in this supportive environment brings a sense of release and companionship\, without falling into self-pity. The Zoom format allows us to connect\, forming a familiar\, supportive group without needing to be physically present. Zenshin’s integration of Buddhist teachings with the experience of illness has deepened my understanding of impermanence and dealing with suffering. There’s room to feel lost and be carried\, to be grateful and to complain\, to share and to learn. ‘There is no I\, there is only a we’ has profoundly impacted me\, ending the isolation of chronic illness. The course is truly a gift that nourishes me and reminds me that I am never alone.—Monika R. \n\nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Awaken Self-Compassion Through Art Journaling\, Online 9/8–9/29
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n \n\nFour Tuesdays\, 10 – 11:30 am PT \nHas it been harder to be kind to yourself in the last few years? When we awaken self-compassion\, we connect with our true nature. We remember that we’re not alone\, and that uncertainty isn’t our fault—it’s at the heart of being human. \nIf you struggle with self-judgment\, you may feel cut off from your innate creativity. Art journaling offers a gentle and meaningful way to re-engage with this part of yourself. \nIn this nurturing and experiential class\, Lea will guide you in: \n\nCreating a criticism-free zone in your life through art journaling\nDiscovering and exploring the fundamentals of self-compassion\nGetting more comfortable with uncertainty as we continue to face it together\nPracticing self-compassion in a playful\, creative way\n\nEach class includes meditation\, experiential teaching\, art journaling\, and group discussion. The goal is to bring a spirit of curiosity and self-compassion to the joys and challenges of everyday life. \nArt experience is not necessary! These are very simple\, accessible creative practices. It’s more about the heart than the art! \nSuggested Supplies:Watercolor sets and paper (either one is great) \n\nWatercolor set\nWatercolor pad (any watercolor pad of this size with 30 pages would work well)\n\nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

All guests will be seated on stools. No prior experience is necessary; brief instructions will be given to help you fully participate. \nPlease plan to wear shoes that are easy to slip off and socks\, and bring a handkerchief. Comfortable clothing with a long (over-the-knee) skirt or long pants is appropriate.

SUMMARY:Resonant Void: A Butoh Performance\, CC 9/12
DESCRIPTION:Resonant Void is a Butoh-inspired performance exploring the space between birth and dissolution\, presence and disappearance\, and the hidden emotional landscapes of the body. \nDeveloped in Tokyo in collaboration with Japanese Butoh artist Motoya Kondo\, Yuko Kawamoto\, and Minoru Hideshima\, and dramaturg Conan Amok\, and teachers such as Daisuke Yoshimoto\, Yumiko Yoshioka\, Marie-Gabrielle Rothie\, Yumino Seki\, and Seisaku\, the work immerses audiences in a stark\, minimal world shaped by membrane-like materials such as mosquito netting and plastic sheeting. These objects become barriers\, wombs\, thresholds\, and skins—surfaces through which the performer emerges\, retreats\, and transforms. \nDrawing from Butoh’s traditions of slowness\, intensity\, and emotional excavation\, alongside elements of performance art\, somatic practice\, and physical theatre\, the piece moves through trembling stillness\, creaturely transformation\, and ritual-like gesture. \nVisually sparse yet emotionally charged\, Resonant Void invites audiences to witness what often remains unseen: inner movements of feeling\, thresholds between identities\, and the quiet force of becoming. \nIn addition to this performance\, Joanna Rosenfeld is facilitating a three-day Butoh workshop September 11–13.
