SUMMARY:2026 Fall Practice Period at City Center\, 9/30–12/5
DESCRIPTION:The Six Paramitas: Bodhisattva Practices for an Uncertain World\nUse this page to register for RESIDENTIAL participation (living at 300 Page St. for the duration of the practice period). \nThere is also an Online/Commuter option. Commuters can attend in-person or online. \nThe Chinese symbol for Paramita literally means ‘crossing over to the other shore’. The Buddha said\, “Don’t just hope for the shore to come to you. If you want to cross over to the other shore\, the shore of safety\, well-being\, non-fear\, and non-anger\, you have to swim across or row across. You have to make an effort.” This effort is the practice of the Six Paramitas. ─ Thich Nhat Hanh \nThe six paramitas or ‘perfections’ are foundational Buddhist practices that guide individuals on the path to awakening. When practiced deeply\, each of these paramitas\, or far-reaching attitudes\, helps one transcend personal suffering and support others on their journey toward wisdom and peace. \nAccording to Mahayana Buddhism\, a bodhisattva (“Buddha-to-be”) naturally follows and embodies these six transcendental virtues: Generosity (Dana)\, Ethical Conduct (Sila)\, Patience/Forbearance (Kshanti)\, Diligence/Heroic Effort (Virya)\, Concentration/Meditation (Dhyana)\, and Wisdom (Prajna). \nThe perfections are not abstract ideals but practical methods for transforming the mind and our character. They are skillful means for seeing and studying Right Action. Generosity opens the heart. Ethical conduct builds moral stability. Patience protects the mind from anger. Diligence sustains effort. Meditation cultivates concentration. Wisdom reveals the true nature of reality. \nWhen practiced together\, these virtues create a balanced and compassionate life. They help practitioners move beyond selfishness and contribute to the well-being of all beings. Indeed\, these foundational practices are themselves expressions of the Awake Mind\, the mind of Buddha. By actively cultivating them\, we open the possibility of shaping the life we live today and the person we will become. \nAbout the Fall 2026 Practice Period\nThis is a traditional intensive training period common in the schools of Buddhism. This a chance to develop and deepen your practice together with others in a supportive environment and through activities: \n\nPractice Period Portal\nEight-Week Class\nWeekly Small Groups\nMorning and evening zazen\nWednesday and Saturday Dharma talks\nParticipants will also have the opportunity to meet individually with Abbot Tenzen David Zimmerman and/or other practice leaders.\n\nOpen to beginners and experienced practitioners alike. \nPractice Period Schedule \n\nOrientation: Wednesday\, September 30 at 7:30 pm (part of the first Dharma talk)\nClasses led by Abbot David: 8 Mondays\, October 5–November 23\, 7:30-9:00 pm. To prepare\, students may wish to read Turning Suffering Inside Out by Darlene Cohen and/or How to Live Well With Chronic Pain and Illness\, by Toni Bernhard. Please see Zenshin Florence Caplow’s essay on “Dancing in the Dark Fields” as well as her Dharma talk on this subject below. \n\nThis talk was given at Beginner’s Mind Temple by Zenshin Florence Caplow. Zenshin offers stories and teachings from her life as both a Zen practitioner and person with chronic illness\, and readings from her new book\, Tend to Your Spirit: Mindful Living With Chronic Illness. Recorded on Saturday\, November 1\, 2025. \nTestimonials: \n\nChronic suffering is impossible to ignore\, often excruciating and isolating. Florence Caplow’s Dancing in the Fields of Chronic Pain workshops\, with her cheerful and enlightened guidance and the open participation of others\, have consistently provided me with refuge\, inspiration\, and comfort. These workshops are subtle\, magical\, gentle\, and transformative. They embody wisdom in service of compassion. It feels less like practice and more like a rally\, opening our hearts. Thanks to everyone participating and to Zenshin Florence; it has been like a prayer flag of compassion touching my countenance.—Barry E. \n\n\nIn this monthly online gathering\, there is no ‘othering.’ The open and trusting atmosphere that Zenshin and the group co-create is invaluable. Sharing my experiences with chronic illness in this supportive environment brings a sense of release and companionship\, without falling into self-pity. The Zoom format allows us to connect\, forming a familiar\, supportive group without needing to be physically present. Zenshin’s integration of Buddhist teachings with the experience of illness has deepened my understanding of impermanence and dealing with suffering. There’s room to feel lost and be carried\, to be grateful and to complain\, to share and to learn. ‘There is no I\, there is only a we’ has profoundly impacted me\, ending the isolation of chronic illness. The course is truly a gift that nourishes me and reminds me that I am never alone.—Monika R. \n\nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Family Program Offering: Ancestors’ Ritual\, GGF 10/4
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we honor our ancestors and the turning of the seasons. \nThis morning offering from the SFZC Family Program is inspired by the Soto Zen ceremony known as Sejiki – and is a time for honoring those who have died. \nTraditionally\, Sejiki is a ceremony held in the fall for remembering the deceased and offering food and incense for their nurturance. \nIn our adapted family-friendly version of Sejiki\, we will honor our ancestors and loved ones and extend this practice to include our beloved pets and animals who have passed away\, offering treats and small gifts as a way of remembering them. \nTogether\, through shared stories\, creative projects\, and movement\, we will hold grief as a community\, while making time to honor the fall season and receive the Dharma as it is revealed through the land. \nAdvance registration is required.  If it feels right to you\, you may bring a small item to add to the altar we will create together.

All guests will be seated on stools. No prior experience is necessary; brief instructions will be given to help you fully participate. \nPlease plan to wear shoes that are easy to slip off and socks\, and bring a handkerchief. SUMMARY:Deep Rest: Learning to Let Go\, Online 10/4–10/25
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nFour Sundays\, October 4–25\, 2:30–4:00 pm PT \nDeep Rest is a skill that we all need. With regular practice\, we can learn how to allow mind and body to easily transition from their usual activated (sympathetic) state to a relaxed  (parasympathetic) mode. This state is mentally and physically restorative\, bringing balance and ease. Deep Rest is repose—a profound stillness of bodymind that is sustained without strain\, that cultivates refreshment. It is the basis of meditative absorption. \nIn this 4-week class\, we will practice restorative yoga postures and awareness of breathing to bring us into this state of relaxed stillness. As we become familiar with the physical and mental changes that come with Deep Rest\, we can begin to see how we can apply this practice  to meditation. \nA follow-up class\, Deeper Rest: Exploring Relaxation in Daily Life\, will be offered on Sundays in November. Registration is separate; more information is available on the SFZC event page. \nPlease wear comfortable\, non-restrictive clothing and\, if possible\, have the following props available: \n\nYoga mat\nTwo blankets\nYoga strap\nBolster or firm cushion\nEye covering\nYour usual meditation support (cushion\, chair\, or bench)\n\nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Heart Practices of a Bodhisattva: The Six Paramitas\, CC/Online 10/5–11/23
DESCRIPTION:Use this page to register for the class only. \nIf you would like to register for the full Fall Practice Period\, there is a Residential option or an Online/Commuter option. \nEight Mondays\, October 5–November 23 | 7:30–9:00 pm \nThe Six Paramitas or ‘perfections’ are foundational Buddhist practices that guide individuals on the path to awakening. When practiced deeply\, each of these paramitas\, or far-reaching attitudes\, helps one transcend personal suffering and support others on their journey toward wisdom and peace. According to Mahayana Buddhism\, a bodhisattva (“Buddha-to-be”) naturally follows and embodies these six transcendental virtues: Generosity (Dana)\, Ethical Conduct (Sila)\, Patience/Forbearance (Kshanti)\, Diligence/Heroic Effort (Virya)\, Concentration/Meditation (Dhyana)\, and Wisdom (Prajna). Indeed\, these virtues are considered the heart practices of a Bodhisattva. \nIn this eight-week class led by Abbot Tenzen David Zimmerman\, we’ll explore (through lectures\, readings\, group discussions\, and weekly reflections) each of the six paramitas and ways to cultivate and manifest them in our lives to effect transformation at the personal\, interpersonal\, and societal levels. We will also study examples of the perfections from Shakyamuni Buddha’s own previous lives\, drawn from the Jataka tales. \nYou can attend class in-person at City Center or online via Zoom.  \nNote: The October 12 class will be online for everyone due to a temple-observed holiday. \nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:2026 Tassajara Fall Practice Period\, ZMC 10/7–12/19
DESCRIPTION:The 116th Practice Period at Tassajara\nLed by Abbot Dōshin Mako Voelkel\nOctober 7 – December 19\, 2026\nApplication due date is September 30 \nAngo (Practice Period) offers a rare opportunity for experienced practitioners to immerse themselves in the intimacy and rigor of monastic practice at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center (Zenshinji). \n\nSurrounded by the silence and natural beauty of the Ventana Wilderness\, we will devote ourselves to wholehearted practice through the rhythms of monastery life while exploring Eihei Dōgen Zenji’s Genjōkōan\, one of the most treasured and enduring teachings of Dōgen Zenji’s Shōbōgenzō. \nThe title Genjōkōan points to “reality fully manifesting here and now.” Rather than presenting enlightenment as something to attain\, Dōgen invites us to discover the inseparability of practice and realization in the midst of ordinary life. This fundamental question is not answered through ideas or philosophy\, but through meeting each moment completely: with this body\, this mind\, this work\, and this community. \nDuring these three months\, we will return again and again to Dōgen’s teaching of practice-realization (shushō ittō) and to his enduring words: \nTo study the Buddha Way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be actualized by the myriad things. \nTogether we will explore what it means to allow the myriad things to illuminate us\, responding wholeheartedly to whatever arises and discovering the freedom that is already present within the ordinary activity of daily life. In this way\, our monastic life of forms and ceremonies itself becomes the living expression of the Genjōkōan. \nThrough a daily zazen schedule\, formal oryoki meals\, chanting services\, work practice\, study\, dharma talks & classes\, sesshins\, and one-on-one practice discussions with the Abbot and Tassajara’s resident teachers\,* we will continually return to Dōgen’s invitation to realize that as the whole moon is reflected in a single dewdrop on the grass\, nothing is outside this very moment. \nBesides a comparison of Genjōkōan translations\, our textual study will include readings from Shōhaku Okumura’s Realizing Genjōkōan: The Key to Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō\, Shinshū Roberts’s Meeting the Myriad Things: A Zen Practitioner’s Guide to Dōgen’s Genjōkōan\, and assorted other commentaries. \n*This ango may also include the presence of several visiting teachers\, including Sōshin Teah Strozer\, Kokyo Henkel\, and Gendō Lucy Xiao. \n\nFirst Month Only Option: Wednesday\, October 7–Monday\, November 2\nBecause there are many sangha members who would appreciate the opportunity to participate in the forms of a traditional ango but aren’t able to take three months away from their lives or work\, this Tassajara practice period will offer an opportunity for a limited number of practitioners to attend the first month only. During the first month there will be an emphasis on training in the Zen monastic forms and embodying their role in the practice of awakening. \n\nPrerequisites for participating in the first month of the practice period include having sat at least one traditional sesshin and the recommendation of a Zen teacher.\n\nParticipants for the first month will sit a minimum of two days of tangaryo. Please review the information and documents below the prerequisites section on this page and fill out the application\, which includes an option for this one-month participation. Please note that there are only a limited number of spots available for this first month only option. \nFull Practice Period Option: Wednesday\, October 7–Saturday\, December 19\nTo be considered for the full Fall 2026 practice period at Tassajara the following prerequisites must be fully met: \n\nCompletion of at least one two-month residential practice period at San Francisco Zen Center’s City Center or Green Gulch Farm. An exception may be made for those with comparable practice experience elsewhere; the applicant is asked to submit a letter of recommendation from their teacher.\nCommitment to participate in the full three months\nSubmitting a completed application by the September 30 deadline\nTuition paid in full before the start of the practice period\, or use of a practice period credit earned before arrival and approved by the applications committee\n\n* Applying as soon as possible helps Tassajara with the logistics of planning for the practice period; priority of acceptance will be given to those who apply early. \nWe encourage all students to be fully vaccinated against Covid. In addition\, testing and masking protocols may take place during the first few days of the practice period. Please carefully review the Tassajara Health & Safety Protocols. \nSEASONAL WEATHER CONCERNS\nBased on our past experience\, we expect that the seasonal rains will bring additional challenges to the monastery. These challenges include potential flooding as well as debris flow\, slides\, and erosion risks along the Tassajara road and throughout the valley. Due to these potential hazards\, Tassajara practice period participants have been requested to sign a Waiver of Liability\, which is included as a part of the online application form. \nPlease note: please be prepared for additional weather challenges given predictions that late fall 2026/winter 2027 may present a Super El Niño. \nImportant Practice Period Documents: \n\nZMC Practice Period Shingi\nVisitor Waiver\nWhat to Bring\nTassajara Zen Monastic Schedule

Everyone is welcome to drop-in\, no registration required. \nZazenkai\, CC 10/9\nZazenkai\, CC 10/16\nZazenkai\, CC 10/23\nZazenkai\, CC 11/13\nZazenkai\, CC 11/20 \nZazen is the practice of sitting with awareness and experiencing whatever arises. Throughout the history of Zen\, the practice of zazen has been considered the primary agent of awakening. As Dogen Zenji declared\, before bowing\, offering incense or chanting Buddha’s name\, the practice of zazen reveals and expresses awakening. With this in mind\, zazenkai is a period of time dedicated to zazen with minimal traditional formalities. \nThese sittings are suitable for both beginners and experienced sitters. There will be instruction in the details of posture\, breath\, and establishing the mental disposition of experiencing whatever arises. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions about one’s practice. \nThere will be scheduled periods of sitting and walking\, with the option of continuing to sit through the walking meditation if desired. \nPrior Instruction: Although general instruction for meditation is included in these events\, it is recommended that participants attend public Zazen Meditation Instruction beforehand\, which is available in-person on select Saturdays at 8:40 am at 300 Page Street.

SUMMARY:Atemporal Connection: A Butoh Performance (Friday Night)\, CC 10/9 & 10/10
DESCRIPTION:one by oneeveryone has left…autumn wind.—Issa Kobayashi \n\nThe Autumn Butoh offering this year brings together two Butoh dancers that have danced on our stage many times. This is the first time they will meet and perform on the same evenings. \nSandra Soto comes north\, from Guadalajara\, Mexico…and Himiko (Tomoko) travels east\, from Maui\, Hawaii\, both brought to San Francisco by the autumn winds. \nSolo and together\, an Atemporal Connection. \nThis listing is for the Friday night performance. There will also be a performance on Saturday. \nAtemporalCreated and performed by Sandra Soto \nAtemporal explores the unfolding of the body and sound as fields of vibration that expand the perception of space. Through intuition\, movement reveals multiple states of presence in which memory\, matter\, and resonance converge within a single event. \nThe original sound composition by Horacio Cicero Din\, developed through microtonal research and experimental software under the project Din is Noise\, engages with the dance as a living organism. Together\, these two dimensions create a constantly transforming perceptual space\, where the boundaries between body\, sound\, and time gradually dissolve. \nDrawing from the phenomenology of Butoh\, Atemporal offers a sensory experience in which linear time is suspended\, giving way to an expanded present and revealing multiple possibilities of the body and perception. \nConnectionDance/Calligraphy by Himiko (Tomoko Ide) \nConnection is a Butoh and calligraphy performance exploring the invisible threads that bind us—to one another\, to ourselves\, and to something beyond ourselves. \nThe piece begins with a red thread\, carefully gathered and held close to the body. As it slowly unravels\, the thread becomes entangled with the dancer\, transforming from something ordered and contained into something unpredictable and alive. \nThrough the body\, the thread\, and the act of calligraphy\, Connection explores the tension between holding on and letting go\, separation and belonging\, control and surrender. Rather than seeking to untangle everything\, Connection asks what might happen when we allow ourselves to remain inside the complexity. \nPerhaps connection is not something we create. \nPerhaps it is something that has always been there.
