SUMMARY:A Ceremony for Those Who Have Died\, GGF 11/1
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 1\, 2 – 5 pm\, Green Gulch Farm \nIn this afternoon event\, people from all walks of life and loss gather to acknowledge and mourn the death of those who have died. We first create handmade offerings in the Japanese Buddhist tradition of Jizo Bodhisattva\, and then say goodbye in a ceremony of remembrance and letting go. Our time together ends with a procession to the garden\, where we tie paper prayers on the memorial cherry tree with the intention of nurturing the beings who have died and the beings who continue to live. \nThis memorial event originates in the Japanese Buddhist tradition of honoring of Jizo Bodhisattva. One of the most beloved figures of Japanese Buddhism\, Jizo statues are common on roadways\, in parks\, and in cemeteries\, where various items are placed on or near a statue as an offering and petition to Jizo to help guide and protect their loved ones as they make the passage from life into death. Everyone is welcome who has experienced a loss\, and friends and families have found it quite healing to attend together. You are welcome to bring children\, and please know there are several periods of quiet time. It works best if at least two adults attend the event so one can attend to the children if they are not able or willing to participate in the quiet time. There is outdoor space to explore/enjoy if this is the case. \n\nPart 1 of our time together is for creating personal\, unique fabric offerings to be used in the ceremony. We will provide fabric\, scissors\, needle\, and thread. You are welcome to bring your own fabric as well. Red is the traditional color used for Jizo offerings\, but it is not essential. Much of this time is spent in shared silence so we may each be with our own story and experience.\nPart 2 is a ceremony of dedication for those who have died. Everyone is invited to approach the altar\, which is adorned with flowers and statues of various figures of compassion\, including Jizo Bodhisattva\, Our Lady of Guadalupe\, St. Francis\, angels\, and the like. You can make an incense offering\, place your fabric creation on or with a compassion figure\, and speak aloud or silently communicate your wishes for the well-being of your loved ones.\nPart 3 is a silent group procession to the memorial garden\, where we hand tie paper prayers in a special cherry tree. There is time for lingering and enjoying the beauty of the garden\, and the beach is a 20-minute walk away for those with the time and energy.

SUMMARY:Finding Ease: A Zen and Mindfulness Approach to Anxiety\, GGF 11/8
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 8\, 9:30 am–4:30 pm\, in the Wheelwright Center \n\nTo be you is enough\, you know…– Shunryu Suzuki Roshi \n\nAnxiety and our aversion to it are too often accompanied by reactivity and actions that worsen how we feel. We worry. We criticize and judge ourselves. We suffer. Such thoughts\, and the emotions they trigger\, can become overwhelming\, and can feel relentless. \nOur focus during this workshop will be on our direct experience. We will practice uncovering the natural state of a quieted mind\, slowing down enough to see what is actually happening when we describe ourselves as anxious. As we cultivate the opportunity to be with what is truly happening with awareness and clarity\, we can respond to difficulties with consciousness\, ease\, and new choices\, rather than with reactivity\, which can make things worse. \nWith a foundation of the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths\, this Zen and Mindfulness retreat features guided meditations and related tools. We will also integrate psychotherapeutic strategies\, an approach recognized and supported by leading neuroscience and psychological research. Our intention is to guide participants in creating their individual Finding Ease toolbox. \nThere will be time for participants to explore beautiful Green Gulch Farm\, nestled in a quiet and lush valley that is a 45-minute walk from Stinson Beach and the ocean. And those who are interested are welcome to meditate with the Green Gulch community. \nFinding Ease is appropriate for those who are new to meditation as well as experienced meditators.

The sesshin will begin on Tuesday after dinner and conclude with lunch on Sunday. \nTo register for this sesshin\, begin by completing the application form. \nOnce you have been approved for the sesshin\, you will be sent an email with a link to complete your registration and process your payment. \nPlease pay as soon as you are able and at least 2 weeks before the event so waitlist people can be accommodated. \nMeals are included in the cost of sesshin. As most meals will be eaten formally in the zendo meditation hall\, please plan on bringing your oryoki set. If you do not have a set\, you can purchase one on arrival for an additional $55. \nThis sesshin is part of the 2026 Fall Practice Period at Green Gulch Farm\, but is open to registration by those not participating in the practice period. SUMMARY:Sunday Tea Gathering\, GGF 11/15
DESCRIPTION:A kettle of water boiling over a charcoal fire; host and guests gather around to share tea and conversation. \nThe Way of Tea is a Japanese tradition transmitted for centuries\, which emphasizes coming together to share our lives as we drink a bowl of tea. It may be seen as a spiritual practice\, an art form\, a social gathering; and includes the appreciation of calligraphy\, flowers\, ceramics\, and many other crafts\, as well as the preparation of the tea itself. \nYou are invited to join us in the quiet setting of Sowing the Moon Tea House for conversation\, a traditional Japanese sweet\, and a bowl of matcha (whisked green tea). All guests will be seated on stools. No prior experience is necessary; brief instructions will be given to help you fully participate. \nPlease plan to wear shoes that are easy to slip off and socks\, and bring a handkerchief. Comfortable clothing with a long (over-the-knee) skirt or long pants is appropriate.

SUMMARY:One Breath\, One Brushstroke: Intuitive Painting Practice Retreat\, GGF 11/18–11/22
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Nov 18\, 4 pm–Sunday\, Nov 22\, 11 am \nIn this class on intuitive painting\, the invitation is to be mindful as you paint—to paint for the experience\, not for the end product. When we spontaneously create\, we come back to the source at every moment. There is no need to plan\, no need to know anything or to have a goal in mind. There is a simple structure of paint\, paper\, and a brush. It is about the process—the journey to be with whatever arises.  \n\nCan you just watch your brush—take one brush stroke at a time?  \n\nSomething always happens. Paint goes onto the paper.  \nJust like in meditation\, we get to witness our thoughts\, our beliefs\, and our personality structure. And then there are the moments when a color is chosen for no reason; maybe an unexpected image arises and we let it happen. We enter into a flow that touches deeper. Intuitive painting\, when we trust its strangeness\, can take us to the edge of knowing and into the mystery.

SUMMARY:From Hungry Ghost to Grateful Heart: What Practice and Recovery Invite\, GGF 11/29
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 29\, 9:00 am–5:00 pm\, in the Yurt\n \n\n The hungry ghost is a powerful Buddhist metaphor for insatiable hunger of any kind: physical\, emotional\, or mental. As people inclined to addictive behaviors\, we have experienced ourselves (and perhaps still do) as always wanting more\, needing more.  \n \n\n Through the wise nourishment of our twining vines of recovery and practice\, we can befriend these hungry ghosts so that they no longer roam the landscape of our heart-minds to plague us.\n \n\n Please join us for a day of sitting\, personal and shared reflection\, dharma talks\, and dyads. We will explore who our hungry ghosts are\, what they want from us\, and how we might assuage them so that we might journey from suffering to wellbeing with compassion and grateful hearts.

SUMMARY:January 2027 Intensive: Training in Compassion\, Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong\, GGF 1/6-1/27
DESCRIPTION:Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong\n  \nThis three-week retreat offers an opportunity for experienced meditators to join Green Gulch staff in a period of intensive residential practice. Our schedule includes zazen in the early morning\, mid-morning\, afternoon\, and evening; formal oryoki meals; work periods; Dharma talks; and classes. If you do not have prior experience with Zen practice\, we strongly suggest completing a one-day sit or sesshin at Green Gulch before applying for the intensive. \nReview the Sample Schedule/Shingi before submitting your application. Contact the Abbot’s assistant at ggfabbotassist@sfzc.org with questions\, if you aren’t sure if applying is right for you based on your practice experience\, or if or if you require early acceptance notification for travel.\nSubmit your application by November 17\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Four-Day Huayan Study Sesshin\, GGF 2/18–2/22
DESCRIPTION:The Huayan Study Sesshin at Green Gulch Farm with Guo Gu offers a unique\, intensive opportunity to study and explore through embodied practice the powerful and transformative teachings of Huayan Buddhism. \nAt the very center of Chinese Mahayana Buddhism lies the luminous philosophical tradition of Huayan—a treasure trove of profound wisdom that has shaped the whole development of East Asian Buddhism\, especially Chan/Zen. Yet Western Buddhism has evolved in virtual isolation from the transformative teachings of Huayan. \nFor instance\, while concepts like “interconnection” and “interbeing” are widely adopted in Western Buddhist discourse and popular culture\, their origins in Chinese Huayan philosophy remain largely unacknowledged and unexplored. In this four-day retreat-workshop\, Chan teacher Guo Gu will provide a newly translated Huayan source text for an exploratory dive into the rich teaching of interdependence. \nPlease review the tentative daily schedule below. Meals will be informal silent meals in the dining room\, with no oryoki meals. \nStudy Sesshin Schedule \n\n5:00–7:00 am zazen & service (optional)\n9:00 am–12:00 pm Workshop\, studying the Huayan contemplations\n2:00–6:00 pm Sitting\, practicing the Huayan contemplations\n7:00–8:30pm Q&A and discussion of the Huayan contemplations\n\nThe study sesshin will begin with an orientation on Thursday\, February 18 at 7:30 pm and conclude with dinner at 6:00 pm on Monday February 22. Guests are welcome to select the option to extend their stay through morning zazen and breakfast on Tuesday\, February 23. \nIf you have questions about your participation in this sitting\, please contact the ino\, (head of the meditation hall) at ggfino@sfzc.org. \nTo register for this study sesshin\, begin by completing the application form. Once you have been approved for the sesshin\, you will be sent an email that will include a link through which you can process your payment and complete your registration. \nThe registration deadline is February 15.
