Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n \n\nFour Tuesdays\, 10 – 11:30 am PT \nHas it been harder to be kind to yourself in the last few years? We remember that we’re not alone\, and that uncertainty isn’t our fault—it’s at the heart of being human. \nIf you struggle with self-judgment\, you may feel cut off from your innate creativity. Art journaling offers a gentle and meaningful way to re-engage with this part of yourself. \nIn this nurturing and experiential class\, Lea will guide you in: \n\nCreating a criticism-free zone in your life through art journaling\nDiscovering and exploring the fundamentals of self-compassion\nGetting more comfortable with uncertainty as we continue to face it together\nPracticing self-compassion in a playful\, creative way\n\nEach class includes meditation\, experiential teaching\, art journaling\, and group discussion. The goal is to bring a spirit of curiosity and self-compassion to the joys and challenges of everyday life. \nArt experience is not necessary! These are very simple\, accessible creative practices. It’s more about the heart than the art! \nSuggested Supplies:Watercolor sets and paper (either one is great) \n\nWatercolor set\nWatercolor pad (any watercolor pad of this size with 30 pages would work well)\n\nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Living Into the Appropriate Response: Transforming Fear and Anger\, CC 9/20 – Canceled
DESCRIPTION:A monk once asked the 10th-century Zen master Yunmen\, “What are the teachings of a whole lifetime?” \nYunmen replied\, simply: “An appropriate response.” \nOur lives ask this of us again and again. \nHow do we respond to suffering\, uncertainty\, conflict\, or the habits that keep us stuck? What does a wise and compassionate response look like\, especially in challenging times? \nBefore we can respond\, we must find our footing. \nIn both recovery and Zen practice\, we learn to take refuge\, to pause\, to become steady\, to return to what is trustworthy. Refuge is not escape from the world\, but a retreat into clarity and support so that we can re-enter our lives with greater wisdom and care. \nIn recovery\, we learn to pause. In Zen\, we learn to see clearly. Together\, these practices help us respond not from reactivity or self-will\, but from steadiness\, honesty\, and heart. \nJoin Cynthia Ryotan and Kogetsu Jenny Mok for a day of meditation\, refuge\, and shared inquiry as we explore what it means to live into an appropriate response\, moment by moment. \nThe retreat will include: \n\nTwo Dharma talks\nSeated and walking meditation\nMindful movement\nReflection and small-group sharing\nA recovery meeting to close the day\n\nAll are welcome — whether you are rooted in recovery\, established in meditation\, or simply seeking a day of refuge and renewal.

SUMMARY:I Am a Part of Infinity: The Spiritual Journey of Albert Einstein\, CC 9/19
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free book event with Kieran Fox\, MD PhD\, author of I Am a Part of Infinity: The Spiritual Journey of Albert Einstein. Kieran is a physician-scientist at the University of California SF\, where his research centers on the neural mechanisms and therapeutic potential of meditation practices and psychedelic medicines. \nAlbert Einstein remains renowned around the world for revolutionizing our understanding of the cosmos\, but very few realize that the celebrated scientist had a deep spiritual side.  \nI Am a Part of Infinity offers the first in-depth exploration of Einstein’s spirituality\, showing how he drew on a dazzling diversity of thinkers—from Pythagoras to Plato\, Schopenhauer to Spinoza\, the Upanishads to Mahatma Gandhi—to create a novel system where mysticism met mathematics\, reality was revered\, and the human mind was honored as a mirror of the infinite. Einstein asked us to commune with the cosmos\, to treat every living creature with compassion\, to channel the power that permeated all things and put it to use for pure purposes.

SUMMARY:Dancing in the Dark Fields of Illness & Pain\, Online 8/22–10/3
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nSix Saturdays\, August 22–October 3\, 1–2:30 pm PTClass does not meet on September 12 \nThis is an online introductory class for people who are working with the fierce teachers of chronic illness or chronic pain. In this six-part interactive class we will share our stories and explore practices that may be useful on the journey. \nZenshin Florence Caplow\, who will be teaching the class\, has “danced” with auto-immune illness for the last two decades\, including rheumatoid arthritis. She is a Zen priest and teacher\, co-author of Tend to Your Spirit: Mindful Living With Chronic Illness\, and a Unitarian Universalist minister. She is also co-editor of The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women. \nOptional readings will be shared during the class. To prepare\, students may wish to read Turning Suffering Inside Out by Darlene Cohen and/or How to Live Well With Chronic Pain and Illness\, by Toni Bernhard. Please see Zenshin Florence Caplow’s essay on “Dancing in the Dark Fields” as well as her Dharma talk on this subject below. \n\nThis talk was given at Beginner’s Mind Temple by Zenshin Florence Caplow. Zenshin offers stories and teachings from her life as both a Zen practitioner and person with chronic illness\, and readings from her new book\, Tend to Your Spirit: Mindful Living With Chronic Illness. Recorded on Saturday\, November 1\, 2025. \nTestimonials: \n\nChronic suffering is impossible to ignore\, often excruciating and isolating. Florence Caplow’s Dancing in the Fields of Chronic Pain workshops\, with her cheerful and enlightened guidance and the open participation of others\, have consistently provided me with refuge\, inspiration\, and comfort. These workshops are subtle\, magical\, gentle\, and transformative. They embody wisdom in service of compassion. It feels less like practice and more like a rally\, opening our hearts. Thanks to everyone participating and to Zenshin Florence; it has been like a prayer flag of compassion touching my countenance.—Barry E. \n\n\nIn this monthly online gathering\, there is no ‘othering.’ The open and trusting atmosphere that Zenshin and the group co-create is invaluable. Sharing my experiences with chronic illness in this supportive environment brings a sense of release and companionship\, without falling into self-pity. The Zoom format allows us to connect\, forming a familiar\, supportive group without needing to be physically present. Zenshin’s integration of Buddhist teachings with the experience of illness has deepened my understanding of impermanence and dealing with suffering. There’s room to feel lost and be carried\, to be grateful and to complain\, to share and to learn. ‘There is no I\, there is only a we’ has profoundly impacted me\, ending the isolation of chronic illness. The course is truly a gift that nourishes me and reminds me that I am never alone.—Monika R. \n\nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.
