“In a way, nobody sees a flower, really. It is so small that we haven't time. And to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.” --Georgia O’Keeffe
Drawing is a window into the present moment. In this weekend retreat, we gather to slow down and attend to the beauty in Tassajara’s verdant valley through meditation, drawing, and play. Many studies illuminate the calming and restorative nature of drawing and its positive effect on brain health and well-being. We’ll explore the movement of pencil on paper and learn simple drawing and painting techniques. We’ll contemplate found objects, plants and landscapes with new eyes and appreciation. Short periods of meditation and Dharma talks will be included each day. Together we will observe and draw with “beginner’s mind,” whether we are experienced artists, have some or no experience, or have even declared, “I can’t draw.” There will be ample free time for participants to enjoy the legendary hot springs, outdoor pool, hiking trails, and individual drawing time. Meditation and service in the zendo are also available for those who wish to join in the resident schedule.
Recommended Materials: A detailed Materials List & Notes pdf will be emailed to you before the course, with plenty of time for acquiring supplies. Sam will also offer to provide pre-ordered items.
Sketchbooks or paper
1. Sketchbook suitable for watercolor. Paper rated 120-140lb (270-300gsm). I like roughly a 5x8” size. Some brands I use are: Stillman and Birn (Beta or Zeta model), Strathmore, Handbook, Moleskin, Etchr, Canson. Cold press paper has some texture. Hot press is smooth.
2. Sketchbook or pad for drawing/sketches/ideas. 8x10” or larger. This can be an inexpensive, thinner paper model, even from the dollar store, kid’s or drugstore aisle.
3. One large piece of paper to be made in class into an accordion journal. Provided for purchase by Sam.
Watercolors, Watercolor brushes
Micron, Staedtler, or Copic style pens/waterproof liners in black ink; sizes 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.8, or 1.0.
Colored pencils, watercolor pencils, or markers
If you have supplies already, or items you like to use, feel free to bring and use what you like! Paper or Sketchbook rated for “Light Wash” or “Mixed Media” can also work fine for this course.
