Suzuki Roshi* said, “To be you is enough, you know …”

With compassion and curiosity, this course explores meeting and shifting our experience of anxiety and depression, and the suffering they cause. We’ll use the lens of Zen Buddhism and contemporary mindfulness practices for our exploration, with The Mindful Way through Depression for our current-day text, The Four Noble Truths (Wikipedia link), and The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching for our Zen text.

These two wise and powerful approaches will be woven together through study-discussion, guided meditations, and experiential exercises. Students will be encouraged to read in advance of each class, applying prompt questions provided with each assignment. As a result of this shared inquiry, participants will:

  • Understand that suffering from anxiety and depression also includes the seeds of transformation.
  • Awaken to the relationship between grasping and suffering.
