Three-month session: every other Monday, 5:30 – 7 pm PT, January – March: January 10 & 24; February 7 & 21; March 7 & 21

Kindness, mindfulness, and therapeutic tools are engaged to shift our relationship with depression, anxiety, and their companions—judgement and self-criticism—in San Francisco Zen Center’s Transforming Depression and Anxiety (TDA), and Finding Ease with Anxiety (FE) classes and workshops.

This 3-month virtual practice community is offered to course participants and anyone who feels they will benefit from these practices. We will engage compassion and use TDA/FE tools to disrupt reactive thought patterns that threaten to steal our peace of mind-heart, and the moment.

We will also work with questioning old stories that can literally poison our perceptions of self, others, and reality. Our purpose is to live more fully in the present moment, less affected by reactivity, rumination and worry. Living this way is one of the most powerful antidotes to lowered and agitated moods, and to see what is good in our lives.

Led by Jisho Lisa Beth Hoffman, each group will include a brief guided meditation, a short teaching about a TDA practice, discussion, and a closing guided meditation. TDA workshop and course co-leaders Tenzen David Zimmerman and Paul Irving will each guest teach one session.

If you have taken TDA or FE, we invite you to try this practice group. If you have not experienced TDA or FE, you are also warmly welcomed to join. We do ask that you prepare for the group, and there are several ways you can do so. One is to take the self-paced online course Befriending Your Pain, taught by the late Dr. Lee Lipp, who created the TDA-FE offerings, and is a wise and delightful teacher.

Another option is read The Mindful Way Through Depression, which Dr. Lipp used in designing the TDA offerings. And a third possibility is to sign up for SFZC’s Sangha News which will include notice about the next TDA/FE offerings to see if there is one you can take before the practice group begins.
