This workshop is highly experiential and will not be recorded.
Four Tuesdays, 5:30 – 6:45 pm PT
What part should—or could—reading play in our daily lives or our practice? Reading is often associated with "study" and, by all means, there is much to be learned from the systematic study of Zen liturgy or the essays of Dōgen’s Shobogenzo. Yet reading can also be a more contemplative part of our practice—a respite, refuge, a smaller and more casual opportunity for reflection and even rest.
In this series of classes, we’ll explore both what and how we read as part of our practice. Our texts will range from classical and modern Buddhist works to contemporary poetry and nonfiction prose, and our ways of reading will range from study to copying to reading aloud and listening. Everyone is welcome.
