Thursdays, 7 – 8:15 pm PT

Eihei Dogen (1200-1253) established Soto Zen Buddhism in Japan and that tradition is the one Shunryu Suzuki brought to San Francisco Zen Center. Studying Dogen’s teachings is a basic element of Soto Zen practice and understanding. “Genjokoan” is one of the most popular chapters of Shobogenzo, a compilation of Dogen's teachings. The title can be translated “Actualizing the Fundamental Point.” It is included in SFZC’s liturgy. As with many of Dogen’s works, “Genjokoan” includes practical and spiritual perspectives.

Familiarity with "The Heart Sutra" and commentaries on it is helpful though not required. This class will be an introduction using Shohaku Okumura’s commentary Realizing Genjokoan, available through SFZC's Online Store.
