Four Thursdays, 7:30 – 9 pm PT
The story of Hyakujo (Baizhang) and the fox, the second koan in the Mumonkan, is relatively long and complicated, and one of the few places in that literature where the traditional Buddhist teaching on karma and rebirth is taken up and explored. It provides an excellent basis for examining life and practice, cause and effect, myth and metaphor. In this class, we will study the koan and commentaries both ancient and modern to understand and clarify what it is intended to convey.
