Sunday, 10 am – 4:30 pm PT

Explore the awakening heart-mind teachings of bodhicitta on the meditation cushion and in the art studio.

Join Artmonks Suiko McCall (painter, Art Monastery Founder & Abbess) and Qayyum Johnson (poet, sculptor, and Zen activist) in this immersive daylong online retreat that explores art and Zen. We will build a bridge to unify your creative and spiritual practices in the context of a supportive community of creative contemplatives. Together we will cultivate an uplifted spirit of inquiry as a powerful antidote to the challenges and heartaches of artmaking so that you can finish the day feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and liberated in your practices. Indulge in guided art exercises, art-dharma talks, and enjoy time to work on your own creative project away from the computer.

Beginners welcome. No experience necessary.

  • journal & a fast writing pen
  • a totebag or basket for gathering natural materials

During our workshop, we will be going outside to find both the inspiration and the materials for making art ephemeral outdoor art, earth altars.

Optional preparation: forage some materials for your earth altar. (This is especially useful if you expect inclimate weather or, for whatever reason, going outside during our workshop doesn't work for you). Take a walk, wandering freely and moving intuitively. Gather items that catch your eye that are freely offered by the earth (meaning, they are already on the ground): leaves, stones, feathers, petals, seeds, nuts, shells.
