Friday – Sunday
Are you stuck creatively? Do you long to bring Buddhist principles to your creative process? Are you thirsty to rejuvenate your connection to artmaking?
The Art Monastery and San Francisco Zen Center invite you to an immersive online weekend that will offer you new tools to drop into vital states of spaciousness, relaxation, and joy. Surprise yourself by encountering the mysterious and powerful life force that courses below the surface of your everyday habits. Leave this weekend feeling rejuvenated in your body, mind, and spirit, with a profound sense of freedom of expression and playful joy in your creative practice.
Join husband-and-wife team Art Monastery Abbess Suiko McCall and Zen farmer-artist Qayyum Johnson in a heart-led experiential workshop that will explore what happens when we move our awareness from the logical, linear, and linguistic left brain where we live most of our modern lives, and attune/commune with the non-conceptual energy field beneath and around our thinking minds.
We will investigate what the more-than-human natural world has to teach us about how to live in balance and engage in meditation practices that encourage us to feel our bodies directly. We’ll also experiment with creative practices that seek to dance with consciousness and allow our unique blessings to find expression in language, mark-making, and other forms of art.
Whether you already have an art practice or are looking to reconnect with your creativity, this workshop opens the door to marrying the dharma with artmaking and as a result, deepening both practices.
This online retreat will offer
- guided creative practices with Suiko
- Dharma talks with Qayyum
- spacious time to work on your own creative projects offline and away from the computer
- zazen (meditation) instruction
- guided Artmonk Practice of sitting, drawing, and gentle movement
- Meditation cushion
- Journal or sketchbook
- Whatever artmaking supplies you’d like to use
- A pencil, pen, or fine-tipped marker for a drawing-based practice
ALL art forms are welcome!
Join us for a time of deep replenishment and expansion of the heartmind.
