Study the teachings of Suzuki Roshi by hearing them in his own voice.

In recent years, San Francisco Zen Center has been working to preserve its extensive archive of recorded talks. As a part of this work, recordings of SFZC founder Shunryu Suzuki Roshi have come to light which were either thought to be lost, or had simply disappeared from the records.

In this second part of our series, we will be gathering among friends to listen to talks by Suzuki Roshi that cover various stages of his U.S. teaching career: from the early days at Sokoji in San Francisco, through his leadership as Abbot of Tassajara Zen Mountain Center when it was founded in 1967, until his death in 1971 from cancer at 300 Page Street (SFZC City Center).

There will be opportunities to discuss our understanding of his teachings, and to hear from Abbot Ed Sattizahn about his personal experiences with Suzuki Roshi.

The 4-week series that we offered in January 2022 as the Awakening the Archive project launched is now offered on the course page at learn.sfzc.org. The talks from that series were those that formed the basis of Suzuki's much-loved book Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. Also available in the Shambhala Library edition.
