The teaching of the Ten Oxherding Pictures dates from 12th century China and is one of The Four Texts of the Zen Sect.* The ox represents Buddha nature and the pictures and verses that accompany them describe taming the ox as the realization of Buddha nature. As we study this supportive text of a path of awakening, class participants are invited to create their own ten images of this process.
The texts for this class will be Lectures on the Ten Oxherding Pictures**, a translation of lectures by Yamada Mumon, and chapter 11, “The Ten Oxherding Pictures,” in Hoofprint of the Ox by Master Sheng-yen.
*The others are Faith in Mind, Song of Enlightenment, and The Principles of Zazen.
**It has come to my attention that the print version of this text is prohibitively expensive. A PDF version is available through SCRIBD, free for 30 days or through a $9.99 per month subscription, which can be canceled at any time.
$129; $116 current SFZC members; $77 limited income.
Other options: $54; $27; $0.
