About the Spring 2020 Online Practice Period
How do we learn to open our hearts in a troubled world? When the suffering of others threatens to overwhelm us, how can we nurture compassion rather than shutting down? Which practices will help us take care of ourselves and those around us in the midst of life’s messiness?
There is a bridge that can take us from where we are to where we hope to be. That bridge is called bodhichitta or “awakened heart/mind.” In this six-week practice period we will focus on a buddhist treasure called Lojong (translated as Mind Training) to help guide us across that bridge. Through a series of 59 insightful and pithy slogans, Lojong trains us to stay with suffering—our own, as well as that of others—and transform that energy into compassion.
Through a series of talks, classes, discussion, memorization, and zazen we will together explore these rich teachings.
This Spring Practice Period is a chance to develop and deepen your practice together with others in a supportive environment and through activities including daily sitting, study, practice discussion with the teachers, and weekly sangha discussions. Weekly events include classes, ceremonies (as available online), dharma talks, and Thursday evening small groups with practice leaders. During the six weeks students will have the opportunity to meet individually with practice leaders.
As part of the practice period, Mary Stares will also teach an online four-week class, A Bridge of 59 Stones on Saturday mornings, 8:45 – 9:45 am, May 9 through May 30.
