Tuesday evening class

When the Buddha was asked by a traveler who noticed his unusual appearance, “What are you? Are you a god?” He  said, “No.” “Are you a water spirit?” He said, “No.” “Are you a demon?” “No.” “Are you a human being?” “No.” “Then what  are you?” The Buddha replied, “I am awake.”

For me, Zen is basically a response to this question; and to the historical inquiry that follows as each of us endeavors to discover what it means to be awake, and how we’ll know if and when we are. You are warmly invited to join me and other seekers for a 4-week conversation in which we will contemplate this core question of this human life, “Are You Awake?”

Before endeavoring to answer such a provocative inquiry, it’s helpful to know how “awakening” is understood in the Buddhist Tradition, both historically and presently. The outline of our conversation is as follows:

Week 1: Introduction: Koans as Zen storytelling

Week 2: “Does a Dog Have Buddha Nature?”

Week 3: “A person of the way does not ignore cause and effect.”

Week 4: “Are you awake?”
