SUMMARY:NOT POEMS! A free monthly Poetry Night at SFZC Featuring Andrey Aleshintsev\, CC 10/23
DESCRIPTION:Who says my poems are poems? My poems are not poems. When you know that my poems are not poems\, Then we can speak of poetry!— Ryokan\, Zen monk & poet (1758-1831) \n\nAll are invited to participate in a monthly night of poetry in the City Center Bookstore. \nFacilitated by Kevin Starbard and Christopher Robin Gallagher\, this offering will take place once a month. \nThis month\, we are ecstatic to announce that we are featuring acclaimed poet and author Andrey Aleshintsev! \nWe welcome you to express yourself\, down to the marrow of your heartstrings. These are painful and extraordinary times that we are living in. Please let us know what you have to say. \nInvite your friends and loved ones to witness your take on the current state of affairs\, and/or existence as a whole. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you there. \n  \n \nChristopher Robin Gallagher \nChristopher Robin Gallagher has served as the Program Registrar and Senior Reservationist for San Francisco Zen Center since 2015. He has performed poetry throughout North America for close to thirty years. Here is a sample of the message that he is hoping to uplift the human race with: \nMy heart breaks like porcelainOver the beauty of it allI’m not sure where to beginWinter\, Spring\, Summer\, or Fall \n  \n \nKevin Starbard \nKevin Starbard has been curating Zen Arts events at City Center since 2022. \nHe currently serves as Bookstore Manager at City Center\, and has practiced at all 3 SFZC temples\, and at Toshoji temple in Tokyo. \n  \n \nAndrey Aleshintsev \nAndrey Aleshintsev is the author of The Primal Verses\, published by Ajion Press. SUMMARY:Outreach: Hygiene Kit Packing\, CC 10/24
DESCRIPTION:One in five children in the U.S. lives in low-income households\, and many lack consistent access to essentials. Schools report that students often miss class or avoid participation simply because they don’t have what they need to feel clean\, comfortable\, and confident. \nWe will partner with a local nonprofit\, Simply the Basics\, to assemble hygiene kits that will be distributed at schools and educational centers. Hygiene is not a privilege; it’s a foundation for health\, confidence\, and opportunity. We will come together to set our intention\, enjoy tea and cookies\, and assemble kits for later distribution.

SUMMARY:Love and Power: Responding to Fear\, CC 10/31
DESCRIPTION:A monk asked Ummon\, “What is the teaching of a whole lifetime?”Ummon replied\, “An appropriate response.”—Blue Cliff Record\, Case 14 \n\nResponding appropriately to the demands of life is a foundational practice for awakened living. In relationship with those we love\, and in meeting the wider world\, our capacity to respond with clarity and steadiness can feel obscured when fear arises.        In this day of practice\, we will gently and directly explore the nature of fear. How does fear take shape in body and mind? In what ways does it narrow our vision or limit our freedom? What becomes possible when we turn toward fear with awareness and compassion\, rather than turning away? How do we respond appropriately in fearful times? \nThrough zazen\, Dharma teachings\, guided reflection\, and discussion\, we will investigate how accepting fear—just as it is—can soften its grip. We will practice taking refuge in ways that no longer allow fear to stop or drive us\, instead establishing a path for appropriate response. \nParticipants are invited to arrive early in the day and attend the Dharma Talk at 10:15 am with the guiding teacher Shosan Victoria Austin. The talk will also be live-streamed via the online zendo.  \nParticipants are invited to enjoy tea and cookies and a vegetarian lunch (by donation onsite) at Beginner’s Mind Temple. \nThis registration is for the onsite workshop at City Center on Saturday\, October 31. There is a separate online workshop on Sunday\, November 1. Participants are welcome to register for either the onsite workshop\, the online workshop\, or both.
