SUMMARY:Outreach: Hygiene Kit Packing\, CC 10/24
DESCRIPTION:One in five children in the U.S. lives in low-income households\, and many lack consistent access to essentials. Schools report that students often miss class or avoid participation simply because they don’t have what they need to feel clean\, comfortable\, and confident. \nWe will partner with a local nonprofit\, Simply the Basics\, to assemble hygiene kits that will be distributed at schools and educational centers. Hygiene is not a privilege; it’s a foundation for health\, confidence\, and opportunity. We will come together to set our intention\, enjoy tea and cookies\, and assemble kits for later distribution.

SUMMARY:Love and Power: Responding to Fear\, CC 10/31
DESCRIPTION:A monk asked Ummon\, “What is the teaching of a whole lifetime?”Ummon replied\, “An appropriate response.”—Blue Cliff Record\, Case 14 \n\nResponding appropriately to the demands of life is a foundational practice for awakened living. In relationship with those we love\, and in meeting the wider world\, our capacity to respond with clarity and steadiness can feel obscured when fear arises.        In this day of practice\, we will gently and directly explore the nature of fear. How does fear take shape in body and mind? In what ways does it narrow our vision or limit our freedom? What becomes possible when we turn toward fear with awareness and compassion\, rather than turning away? How do we respond appropriately in fearful times? \nThrough zazen\, Dharma teachings\, guided reflection\, and discussion\, we will investigate how accepting fear—just as it is—can soften its grip. We will practice taking refuge in ways that no longer allow fear to stop or drive us\, instead establishing a path for appropriate response. \nParticipants are invited to arrive early in the day and attend the Dharma Talk at 10:15 am with the guiding teacher Shosan Victoria Austin. The talk will also be live-streamed via the online zendo.  \nParticipants are invited to enjoy tea and cookies and a vegetarian lunch (by donation onsite) at Beginner’s Mind Temple. \nThis registration is for the onsite workshop at City Center on Saturday\, October 31. There is a separate online workshop on Sunday\, November 1. Participants are welcome to register for either the onsite workshop\, the online workshop\, or both.

SUMMARY:Finding Ease: A Zen and Mindfulness Approach to Anxiety\, GGF 11/8
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 8\, 9:30 am–4:30 pm\, in the Wheelwright Center \n\nTo be you is enough\, you know…– Shunryu Suzuki Roshi \n\nAnxiety and our aversion to it are too often accompanied by reactivity and actions that worsen how we feel. We worry. We criticize and judge ourselves. We suffer. Such thoughts\, and the emotions they trigger\, can become overwhelming\, and can feel relentless. \nOur focus during this workshop will be on our direct experience. We will practice uncovering the natural state of a quieted mind\, slowing down enough to see what is actually happening when we describe ourselves as anxious. As we cultivate the opportunity to be with what is truly happening with awareness and clarity\, we can respond to difficulties with consciousness\, ease\, and new choices\, rather than with reactivity\, which can make things worse. \nWith a foundation of the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths\, this Zen and Mindfulness retreat features guided meditations and related tools. We will also integrate psychotherapeutic strategies\, an approach recognized and supported by leading neuroscience and psychological research. Our intention is to guide participants in creating their individual Finding Ease toolbox. \nThere will be time for participants to explore beautiful Green Gulch Farm\, nestled in a quiet and lush valley that is a 45-minute walk from Stinson Beach and the ocean. And those who are interested are welcome to meditate with the Green Gulch community. \nFinding Ease is appropriate for those who are new to meditation as well as experienced meditators.

SUMMARY:Jizo Peace Project: Clay Making Gathering for Remembrance and Peace\, CC 11/13
DESCRIPTION:Jizo Bodhisattva is the fearless guardian with deep vow to enter all hell realms to help. They are unwavering in their steadfast resolve and compassionate presence. \nThe Jizo Peace Project arose as a response to the great tragedy in Gaza and Israel. The project’s intention is to honor the children who have perished since October of 2023 in Gaza and Israel. More than 19\,000 children have lost their lives. \nThrough the meditative and intimate act of working with clay\, we create Jizo bodhisattvas who will become part of public exhibits and peace sites\, offering spaces for reflection\, mourning\, and hope. Our gatherings conclude with a simple ritual to honor the lives of these children by reading names. We create a shared space of warmth and care together\, where there is an opportunity to tend to our own hearts while taking part in love in action. \nPlease join us. There is no need for prior experience with clay. Donations are appreciated to cover the materials and expenses for the peace project.

SUMMARY:One Breath\, One Brushstroke: Intuitive Painting Practice Retreat\, GGF 11/18–11/22
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Nov 18\, 4 pm–Sunday\, Nov 22\, 11 am \nIn this class on intuitive painting\, the invitation is to be mindful as you paint—to paint for the experience\, not for the end product. When we spontaneously create\, we come back to the source at every moment. There is no need to plan\, no need to know anything or to have a goal in mind. There is a simple structure of paint\, paper\, and a brush. It is about the process—the journey to be with whatever arises.  \n\nCan you just watch your brush—take one brush stroke at a time?  \n\nSomething always happens. Paint goes onto the paper.  \nJust like in meditation\, we get to witness our thoughts\, our beliefs\, and our personality structure. And then there are the moments when a color is chosen for no reason; maybe an unexpected image arises and we let it happen. We enter into a flow that touches deeper. Intuitive painting\, when we trust its strangeness\, can take us to the edge of knowing and into the mystery.

SUMMARY:From Hungry Ghost to Grateful Heart: What Practice and Recovery Invite\, GGF 11/29
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 29\, 9:00 am–5:00 pm\, in the Yurt\n \n\n The hungry ghost is a powerful Buddhist metaphor for insatiable hunger of any kind: physical\, emotional\, or mental. As people inclined to addictive behaviors\, we have experienced ourselves (and perhaps still do) as always wanting more\, needing more.  \n \n\n Through the wise nourishment of our twining vines of recovery and practice\, we can befriend these hungry ghosts so that they no longer roam the landscape of our heart-minds to plague us.\n \n\n Please join us for a day of sitting\, personal and shared reflection\, dharma talks\, and dyads. We will explore who our hungry ghosts are\, what they want from us\, and how we might assuage them so that we might journey from suffering to wellbeing with compassion and grateful hearts.

SUMMARY:Four-Day Huayan Study Sesshin\, GGF 2/18–2/22
DESCRIPTION:The Huayan Study Sesshin at Green Gulch Farm with Guo Gu offers a unique\, intensive opportunity to study and explore through embodied practice the powerful and transformative teachings of Huayan Buddhism. \nAt the very center of Chinese Mahayana Buddhism lies the luminous philosophical tradition of Huayan—a treasure trove of profound wisdom that has shaped the whole development of East Asian Buddhism\, especially Chan/Zen. Yet Western Buddhism has evolved in virtual isolation from the transformative teachings of Huayan. \nFor instance\, while concepts like “interconnection” and “interbeing” are widely adopted in Western Buddhist discourse and popular culture\, their origins in Chinese Huayan philosophy remain largely unacknowledged and unexplored. In this four-day retreat-workshop\, Chan teacher Guo Gu will provide a newly translated Huayan source text for an exploratory dive into the rich teaching of interdependence. \nPlease review the tentative daily schedule below. Meals will be informal silent meals in the dining room\, with no oryoki meals. \nStudy Sesshin Schedule \n\n5:00–7:00 am zazen & service (optional)\n9:00 am–12:00 pm Workshop\, studying the Huayan contemplations\n2:00–6:00 pm Sitting\, practicing the Huayan contemplations\n7:00–8:30pm Q&A and discussion of the Huayan contemplations\n\nThe study sesshin will begin with an orientation on Thursday\, February 18 at 7:30 pm and conclude with dinner at 6:00 pm on Monday February 22. Guests are welcome to select the option to extend their stay through morning zazen and breakfast on Tuesday\, February 23. \nIf you have questions about your participation in this sitting\, please contact the ino\, (head of the meditation hall) at ggfino@sfzc.org. \nTo register for this study sesshin\, begin by completing the application form. Once you have been approved for the sesshin\, you will be sent an email that will include a link through which you can process your payment and complete your registration. \nThe registration deadline is February 15.

SUMMARY:More Wonder. Less Fear. Five-Day Sesshin\, GGF 3/30–4/4
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 30\, 3:00 pm—Sunday\, April 4\, 2:00 pm \nSesshin\, meaning “to gather\, collect\, and convey the mind-heart\,” is a traditional Soto Zen meditation retreat that includes formal zendo meals\, Dharma talks\, sitting and walking meditation\, and private interviews with senior teachers. \nIn order to understand the nature of our formal retreats\, and to be clear about the details of the practice\, please review a typical sesshin schedule\, as well as the guidelines for zendo conduct. The sesshin will begin that evening after dinner and conclude with lunch on Sunday\, April 4. \nTo apply for this sesshin\, begin by completing the application. Once you have been approved for the sesshin\, you will be sent an email that will include a link through which you can process your payment and complete your registration. \nThe application deadline is March 22.
