SUMMARY:Flower Garland Buddhism: Interdependence\, Social Engagement\, and Abundance\, CC 4/25 – Canceled
DESCRIPTION:Huayan Buddhism arose in the sixth century in China\, rooted in the Mahayana Flower Garland (Huayan) Sutra. Huayan is relational\, practical\, and positive. Its emphasis on interdependence\, celebration of the sensual world\, and diversity of people and practices provides inspiration for what Thich Nhat Hanh called “engaged Buddhism.” \nIn this class\, Zen teacher Ben Connelly explains the significance of Huayan teachings for Buddhist practice\, providing a broad overview of Huayan teachings and their practical implications for contemporary life\, with a mix of testimonies from real-life situations and references to influential Buddhist texts. \nArising fifteen hundred years ago\, Huayan has made a deep impact on East Asian Buddhism\, and has much to offer during this era when many folks see ever-deepening divisions. Connelly explores how Huayan offers particular wisdom for those concerned about how to care for their own lives as they work to end harms such as ecological devastation\, poverty\, militarism\, addiction\, marginalization\, and exploitation. \nBen will illustrate the teachings with stories and lessons from his recent involvement with an array of nonviolent community responses to the violence ICE brought to his hometown Minneapolis over the last few months.

The conversation will range from forms and curriculum to the benefits and joys of the work. \nWe’ll also look at: \n\nOnline and in-person settings\nLay practice and residential/monastic contexts\nPublic and private (dokusan/secret) approaches\nOther non-traditional modes of koan study

SUMMARY:Tada Ima (Just Now)\, CC 4/24 & 4/25
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco Zen Center welcomes Butoh dancer Mayako Okura from Japan for two evenings of performance\, Tada Ima (Just Now) \nMayako will be joined by Bay Area Butoh dancers as well.  \n\nIn the deepest depth of the body.In the depths of myself\,and far beyond\,and beneath this earth. For those who have lived with me all along\,even before I was born. \n“Tadaima. Kaerimashita.”(“I’m home. I’ve returned.”) \n\nIn Japan\,these are the words you saywhen you come back home. \nBut tadaima can also meanjust now—this very moment. \nAnd kaerimashita carries many layers of meaning:to return\, to come back\,to hatch\, to return to the earth—even the word frog\, which echoes kaeru (“to return”). \nTadaima\,just—now\,kaerimashita. \nReturn to the earth.A shell breaks—life hatches. From the soil\, a frog emerges.
