SUMMARY:Radiant Awareness: Backpacking Journey to Tassajara\, ZMC 5/30–6/4
DESCRIPTION:The trek to Tassajara Zen Mountain Center is a beloved and time-honored journey. Rather than driving in—careening through the expansive Ventana Wilderness at a pace that inhibits meaningful contact—let us take days to walk to the monastery on foot\, arriving enriched through immersion in the wild. \nWhat does this wilderness immersion open or allow? Steeped in the demands and complexity of modern\, daily life\, it is easy for our attention to become fragmented\, our inner and outer lives constrained by habits of thought\, and our senses dulled. Backpacking in the wild returns us to simple\, natural rhythms: sleeping on the ground\, rising with the sun\, carrying all that we need on our backs\, walking peacefully in contact with the land for the majority of the day. \nOur senses come alive as our bodies\, minds\, and hearts encounter the beauty and wholesomeness of the wild earth: a chorus of birds at dawn\, the taste of cold spring water\, full inhalations of aromatic plants\, deep shade offered by an oak at midday\, starlight filling our eyes at night. In this way\, wilderness immersion mirrors the essence of Zen practice itself: recalibrating us to perceive the true vibrance of the world\, which transmits its own timeless wisdom. \nOur four-day backpacking journey into Tassajara moves through the ancestral lands of the Esselen People and the eastern heart of an expansive\, biodiverse wilderness—grounding us in a rich historical\, cultural\, and ecological context before we enter the gates of Zen Mountain Center. Walking in the spirit of pilgrimage\, our days are shaped by intention: mindful silence on the trail\, group check-ins and Dharma discussions that form us into a sangha (spiritual community)\, and awareness practices (including daily zazen meditation) that attune us with ourselves and this potent landscape. \nDrawing on their engaged\, respective backgrounds in Zen and Eco-Somatics\, leaders Mike Smith and Ariel Johnson guide us across both wild and perceptual thresholds\, offering simple practices and insights that support reconnection with the Earth\, our animal bodies\, our senses\, our hearts\, and our naturally calm and spacious minds. \nBy the time we arrive at the monastery gate\, we have been polished to a shine by our wild wanderings—alert\, radiant\, and ready to enter fully into the depth of practice offered in Tassajara’s enchanted valley. We then spend two nights at Tassajara dedicated to integration\, sinking into the monastery’s offerings of meditation\, serenity\, and community. When it is time to return home\, may we carry this radiant awareness with us\, meeting our ordinary lives and the challenges of our time with more clarity\, presence\, resilience\, and care. \nImportant Notes: \n\nThe full experience takes place over six days\, from Saturday\, May 30th to Thursday\, June 4th\, 2026.\nThe last two nights (June 2 and 3) will require booking accommodations at Tassajara.\nExperience with backpacking or Tassajara/Zen is not required; Wildtender provides support for physical and psychospiritual preparation\, and weaves wilderness skill-building\, Zen instruction\, and orientation to Tassajara into the program.

SUMMARY:Easy as Breathing: Wild Heart Writing for Women\, GGF 6/10–6/14
DESCRIPTION:Loosen your creativity\, fill your page with words that want to be written\, and share your stories in an inspiring\, supportive setting. \nAuthentic\, compelling writing comes from a place of emptiness and mindfulness. By showing up\, listening\, and writing what arises\, we discover the ideas we need to bring to light. We calm the mind\, then follow playful and provocative prompts to start our pens flowing. With timed exercises\, we bypass our inner critics and write consciously and freely. Words appear. Memories stir. Tales breeze in and land on the page. After writing\, we read aloud and encourage one another\, without critiquing. \nThis practice can serve as a form of meditation or a way to discover the writer within\, jumpstart any writing project\, or add new tools to your writer’s belt. \nWriting experience is not needed. A willingness to be quiet and to play is all. \nNo special materials or advance reading are necessary. Participants should bring pen and a notebook or paper\, since laptop use is not fitting for this modality. \nThis retreat welcomes all self-identified women.

SUMMARY:Prism: Butoh Meditation Workshop\, CC 6/14
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, Butoh is approached not as choreography\, but as a state of consciousness and body. Through meditation\, participants will be guided to allow movement to naturally emerge from within their own bodies. \nNo dance experience is required. Beginners are very welcome. For dancers\, this workshop offers an opportunity to experience a different origin of movement beyond conventional dance practice. \nWhat Kana shares is not technique\, but state and being: \n\nHow to tune your channel of consciousness\nWhat your body is receiving\nWhat kind of “void” exists within you\n\nThrough this process\, we will explore ways of communicating with invisible energies—the core of Butoh—as a practical experience. \nNote for participants: If possible\, please wear white clothing. \nIn addition to this workshop\, Kana Kitty is giving two performances with Fenner Merlick and Ember Luna.

SUMMARY:Opening the Heart of Poetry: Writing as a Practice of Transformation & Discovery\, ZMC 6/23–6/28
DESCRIPTION:All welcome\, beginning and experienced writers alike. \nMystery\, generosity\, observation\, and invention are part of any genuinely creative act. So too is the ability to make of ourselves a passageway and conduit to the large and the shared\, the intimate and the private\, the joyous\, the grievous\, the unexpected. The energies of poem-making\, like the energies of existence itself\, are transforming and undomesticable forces. Yet they can be invited and welcomed. The cultivation of an open and permeable attention in many directions will be at the heart of this gathering. Along with invitations to write and brief talks touching on poetry and Zen as shared practices\, there’ll be time for consideration of craft and for poems’ exchanging; time for reading\, rest\, and free writing; and time\, as always\, to experience Tassajara’s own teachings: the poems of meditation hall and creek\, of birdsong\, yucca\, and steepness\, of hot springs and clear-sky stars. \nParticipants should bring with them a selection of five or six poems written by others (no longer than one page\, please) that they find transformative\, revelatory\, moving\, consoling\, awakening of depth; also writing materials\, creativity’s intentions\, and perhaps a few questions.

SUMMARY:Cultivating a Mind of Radical Trust-Sangha Week\, ZMC 6/23–6/28 – Waitlist Only
DESCRIPTION:Join Central Abbot Tenzen David Zimmerman with the Tassajara residential community in this opportunity to immerse yourself in Zen practice during the summer at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. Each day of the Sangha Week will include morning and evening zazen\, liturgical services\, three and a half hours of work practice\, communal meals\, and a daily group meeting for Dharma study and discussion. There will also be time each afternoon\, before and after the study sessions\, to rest\, relax\, and enjoy the natural beauty of Tassajara. \nDuring our afternoon sessions\, we’ll be exploring a beloved 6th-century poem\, Xin Xin Ming (‘Trust in Mind’ or ‘Faith in Mind’)\, attributed to Zen’s third Chinese Ancestor\, Sengcan\, which begins with the following provocative lines: “The Great Way is not difficult for those who have no preferences. When love and hate are both absent\, everything becomes clear and undisguised. Make the smallest distinction\, however\, and heaven and earth are set infinitely apart.” \nTrust in Mind offers an extraordinarily straightforward message that points to the heart and aim of Zen practice: the path of liberation is found by letting go of dualistic thinking (eg\, right/wrong\, like/dislike)\, cultivating a peaceful\, trusting heart-mind\, and realizing non-duality (oneness) in all things. When we can intentionally surrender our judgments\, preferences\, self-clinging\, and reliance on conceptual thinking\, we can experience effortless awareness\, equanimity\, and freedom from striving and worldly attachments. Sengcan’s poem offers profound teachings that can help us trust our True Heart-Mind\, even as we navigate uncertain times. \nAll levels of practice experience are welcome.

SUMMARY:Whole Heart\, Boundless Heart: A retreat on the four Brahmaviharas\, ZMC 6/30–7/5
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a creative and heart-centered retreat! The four Immeasurables\, or Brahmaviharas\, are boundless capacities of love and kindness\, compassion\, empathetic joy\, and equanimity.  Recent scientific studies support what Buddhist practitioners have experienced for millenia: Cultivating these qualities supports increased satisfaction and joy in our hearts and interpersonal lives\, and grounds the mind and meditative practice. \nJoin old friends Dawn Neal and Abbot Mako for a retreat dedicated to cultivating these boundless qualities. We will spend time learning the ancient meditative practices\, as well as integrating them with creative and conversational approaches.

SUMMARY:Rooted in Awareness: Iyengar Yoga and Zen to Embody Your Life\, ZMC 6/30–7/5 – Waitlist Only
DESCRIPTION:Through the practices of Iyengar Yoga and Zen meditation\, we explore what it means to live with steadiness\, clarity\, and compassion. In this retreat\, we will utilize alignment and awareness as gateways to presence\, cultivating a body that is grounded\, a mind that is quiet\, and a heart that is open. \nEach day will include asana (yoga postures)\, pranayama (breath work)\, and zazen (sitting meditation). Together\, we will investigate how these disciplines support one another\, revealing the interconnection between physical stability and mental stillness. In the peaceful setting of Tassajara\, surrounded by mountains and streams\, we can return to the simplicity of direct experience and the refuge found in awareness itself. \nAll levels of yoga and meditation experience are welcome. Prior study with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher is helpful but not required. Athena offers in-person and online classes for those who wish to become familiar with her teaching before attending the retreat. Book at www.tinyhavenyogasf.com.
