SUMMARY:Being At Tassajara: Esselen Teachings\, Zen Wisdom\, and Ecological Knowledge\, ZMC 4/28–5/3 – Postponed
DESCRIPTION:Deepen your connection with Tassajara through the teachings of three rich traditions: the wisdom of the Esselen people\, the practice of Zen Buddhism\, and the insight of ecological observation. \nThe mountains and waters surrounding Tassajara arose from the Earth’s crust millions of years ago. The Esselen People were the first humans to inhabit this land\, followed by Anglo hunters\, vacationers\, and Zen practitioners. Heat\, ice\, fire\, and flood have shaped all who come here. What can this place teach us? What will appear that we don’t expect? How will we be changed? \nEngaging in storytelling\, botanizing\, and bird watching\, we will learn from our surroundings. Through Dharma talks\, walking meditation\, ceremony\, and zazen\, we will cultivate our awareness\, drawing understanding from our direct experiences and from the shared insights of others. \nNo previous experience is necessary; everyone is welcome to attend this retreat.

SUMMARY:A Living Zen Ceremony: Tea\, Scent\, Breath\, and Voice as Practice\, CC 5/3
DESCRIPTION:A Living Zen Ceremony is a contemporary\, practice-based gathering that invites participants to experience Zen not as a concept\, but as a lived\, embodied practice. \nRooted in silence\, attentiveness\, and impermanence\, this ceremony weaves together tea\, scent\, breath\, and voice as gateways to presence. Rather than a performance to be observed\, the experience unfolds as a shared practice\, one that honors the spirit of Zen while engaging contemporary forms of ritual and sensory awareness. \nParticipants are invited into a quiet space where sight\, sound\, scent\, taste\, and touch arise and dissolve. Tea\, incense\, breath\, and voice appear and disappear\, mirroring the Zen understanding of impermanence.Light meets the eyes and shifts with time. Sound emerges in silence and returns to it. \nFragrance drifts\, lingers briefly\, and vanishes. Warmth\, texture\, and vibration are felt\, then released. Taste is known\, then gone. There is no emphasis on explanation or instruction. Instead\, the experience prioritizes direct perception—simple knowing at the moment of contact. Each sense is met without grasping\, arising when needed\, and dissolving naturally back into stillness. What remains is embodied awareness: listening without effort\, sensing without naming\, presence without attachment. \nSense of SightSense of Taste & TouchSense of HearingSense of Smell & TouchSense of Mind \nThis offering is designed specifically for San Francisco Zen Center\, aligned with its tradition of practice\, simplicity\, and depth\, while gently opening space for new forms of embodied inquiry.

SUMMARY:Dogen's Samadhis: Exploring Zazen Through the Shobogenzo\, Online 5/16
DESCRIPTION:The Zoom link to participate in this event will be provided at least 24 hours before it begins. Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nFor practitioners of Soto Zen\, Dogen Zenji’s understanding of zazen can be elusive\, evocative\, and essential. What might Dogen have meant by samadhi? Reflecting in this way\, what refracts through our zazen practice? \nUsing the jhanas of the Pali tradition as a reference point\, we’ll explore clues about Dogen’s vision of samadhi using three key Shobogenzo fascicles: Kaiin Zanmai (Ocean Seal Samadhi)\, Zanmai o Zanmai (King of Samadhis Samadhi)\, and Bendowa (Talk on Pursuing the Way). We’ll also consider his meditation instructions in light of the famous admonition of “studying seated Buddha.” \nSome questions to consider as we explore:  \n\nIn what way does Dogen’s samadhi include an experience of the body and changing phenomena?\nIs Dogen’s samadhi the same as jhana?\nWhat might it mean to “study seated Buddha”?\nHow does his vision illuminate our contemporary Soto Zen practice?\n\nRecommended but not required: It will be especially helpful to read the three main fascicles\, which will be distributed to participants before our session. We will refer mostly to the translations by the Soto Zen Text Project.  \nRecordings:All course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Bowing to the Wild: Embodied Animism & Zen in the Tassajara Wilderness\, ZMC 5/19–5/24 – Waitlist Only
DESCRIPTION:Just beyond Tassajara’s gate\, another luminous temple vibrates with aliveness\, calls out for our veneration and presence\, and overflows with timeless wisdom: the Ventana wilderness. Suzuki Roshi\, founder of Tassajara\, regarded this landscape as a potent habitat for awakening and the beings within it as fellow practitioners: “Although we practice with people\, our goal is to practice with mountains and rivers\, with trees and stones\, with everything in the world.” \nYet so often\, a modern worldview—shaped by notions of hierarchy\, human exceptionalism\, mechanistic materialism\, and isolation—prevents us from deeply and meaningfully participating in the living world. These inherently destructive perspectives\, at play for millennia and now exacerbated by high technology\, have created a dominant culture that views the natural world at best as a place for recreation\, and at worst as “a storehouse and a sewer\,” in the words of Buddhist eco-philosopher Joanna Macy. \nBuddhism offers another pathway for relating with the natural world: a recognition that “Buddha-nature pervades all beings like the all-encompassing sky” (Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra). From this vantage springs an understanding of not only our fundamental fellowship with all that is\, but also an acknowledgement that everyone and everything is potentially our great teacher… a Buddha. Furthermore\, countless lay practitioners\, monks\, and sages who have peered through the veil of delusion have arrived at the conclusion that no being is separate from another\, and that interbeing—the web of deep relationship—is the truest expression of reality. As Thích Nhất Hạnh teaches\, “We are here to awaken from our illusion of separateness.” These insights resonate with indigenous traditions across the world\, and are likely in accord with the premodern\, land-connected life-ways of all of our ancestors\, regardless of lineage. \nAt this trying moment in history—facing climate breakdown\, profound isolation\, and deepening intolerance—it is a radical and revolutionary act to regard the wild and its non-human inhabitants as wise\, sentient relatives imbued with rights and agency. This recognition is not only an ecological imperative\, but also a reclamation of our own fundamental wholeness and belonging in this world. \nIn this retreat\, we will embrace gestures of reciprocity and kinship with the wild. We will form a sangha of mutual support with the land\, our wild relatives\, and one another\, cultivating relationships for our collective ecological and personal well-being. Through contemplative hiking on rugged and diverse wilderness trails\, we will attune ourselves to the living presence of our more-than-human kin—plants\, animals\, boulders\, waters\, winds. We will engage in Buddhist and non-Buddhist practices to cultivate awareness of the world as it actually is: alive\, aware\, and interconnected. And we will encounter ourselves as members of a vast\, sacred family of beings\, communing in the temple of the wild that has awaited our return. \nImportant Retreat Notes: \nThis retreat will include two full-day hiking excursions into the Tassajara wilderness\, and two half-day hikes\, as well as Zen practice and Dharma discussion on the Tassajara grounds. Hikes take place on rugged and moderate to strenuous wilderness trails\, often featuring very steep and uneven terrain\, overgrown brush\, prolonged sun exposure\, crossing of logs and/or bridges\, and wading through shallow water. Hikes will range from 3-7 miles with elevation gains and losses up to ~1\,500 feet.

SUMMARY:Yoga of Zen\, ZMC 5/19–5/24
DESCRIPTION:Beginnings invite us to pause and listen—to interrupt old patterns and meet ourselves anew. \nThis retreat offers yoga rooted in self-exploration. Students are guided to listen to the intelligence of the body\, cultivating enough quiet to truly hear it. The physical practice is approached not as something to fix or perfect\, but as an experience to inhabit from the inside. Through attention to subtle sensations\, small details become meaningful\, allowing the practice to be fully embodied and deeply felt. \nSupported by daily zazen\, yoga\, and the natural stillness of Tassajara\, we will engage in experiential exercises\, guided meditations\, and reflection. Together\, these practices help transform our stories\, emotions\, and aspirations into sources of nourishment. Zen sessions cultivate attention\, inner quiet\, and open awareness—supporting mind and body to move as one through the yoga asana practice. \nSome experience of yoga and meditation is preferable but not essential.

SUMMARY:Agency\, Interdependence and Compassion: Exploring Themes to Inform Our Most Senior Years\, ZMC 5/26–5/31 – Waitlist Only
DESCRIPTION:This five-day retreat explores the question of agency in the context of aging through the lens of Buddhist practice. How do we stay awake\, responsive\, and connected as our capacities and roles change? Participants will engage in zazen\, mindful discussion\, experiential exercises\, and contemplative inquiry to deepen awareness of interdependence and self-compassion. \nAging invites us to meet limitations and transitions not as failures\, but as opportunities for presence and wisdom. Together\, we will examine the ways we give and receive help\, communicate our needs\, and act from a place of clarity and care. Through meditation\, shared meals\, exercises in compassion\, and supportive dialogue\, we will cultivate the capacity to respond with grace and dignity to the unfolding of life as it is.

SUMMARY:The Wonder of Bird Song\, GGF 5/27–5/30
DESCRIPTION:In this overnight retreat\, we will enter the world of birds and bird sounds\, with morning and evening outings led by Zac Denning in the Green Gulch Farm grounds. Our goal will be to immerse ourselves for a short time in the lives of birds\, learning about how and why they sing\, and about the wonders and struggles of their daily existence. On the outings\, we’ll be standing still for long periods to listen to particular birds\, then walking a short distance\, and listening again\, etc. Zac will share bird anecdotes—humorous\, scientific\, or quirky—that will help us to appreciate them as individuals\, and to understand the challenges they face in a human-modified world. Appreciating birds is more our aim than identification\, but Zac will also try to familiarize you with a few songs you might be able to recognize later. \nAbove all\, by listening to birds\, we hope to leave our preoccupations behind for a few moments\, and inhabit the immediacy and vibrance of lives that are radically different from our own. Bring lots of warm layers\, including under-layers\, hats\, scarves\, and gloves\, for standing mostly still on a cold coastal spring evening and morning. Binoculars are not at all required (we’ll be using both our ears and eyes)\, but feel free to bring them if you have access to a pair. Walking difficulty will be easy to moderate\, with distance of ½ to ¾ mile or less\, often on fire roads or dirt/gravel paths\, with a few short\, moderate inclines.

SUMMARY:Radiant Awareness: Backpacking Journey to Tassajara\, ZMC 5/30–6/4
DESCRIPTION:The trek to Tassajara Zen Mountain Center is a beloved and time-honored journey. Rather than driving in—careening through the expansive Ventana Wilderness at a pace that inhibits meaningful contact—let us take days to walk to the monastery on foot\, arriving enriched through immersion in the wild. \nWhat does this wilderness immersion open or allow? Steeped in the demands and complexity of modern\, daily life\, it is easy for our attention to become fragmented\, our inner and outer lives constrained by habits of thought\, and our senses dulled. Backpacking in the wild returns us to simple\, natural rhythms: sleeping on the ground\, rising with the sun\, carrying all that we need on our backs\, walking peacefully in contact with the land for the majority of the day. \nOur senses come alive as our bodies\, minds\, and hearts encounter the beauty and wholesomeness of the wild earth: a chorus of birds at dawn\, the taste of cold spring water\, full inhalations of aromatic plants\, deep shade offered by an oak at midday\, starlight filling our eyes at night. In this way\, wilderness immersion mirrors the essence of Zen practice itself: recalibrating us to perceive the true vibrance of the world\, which transmits its own timeless wisdom. \nOur four-day backpacking journey into Tassajara moves through the ancestral lands of the Esselen People and the eastern heart of an expansive\, biodiverse wilderness—grounding us in a rich historical\, cultural\, and ecological context before we enter the gates of Zen Mountain Center. Walking in the spirit of pilgrimage\, our days are shaped by intention: mindful silence on the trail\, group check-ins and Dharma discussions that form us into a sangha (spiritual community)\, and awareness practices (including daily zazen meditation) that attune us with ourselves and this potent landscape. \nDrawing on their engaged\, respective backgrounds in Zen and Eco-Somatics\, leaders Mike Smith and Ariel Johnson guide us across both wild and perceptual thresholds\, offering simple practices and insights that support reconnection with the Earth\, our animal bodies\, our senses\, our hearts\, and our naturally calm and spacious minds. \nBy the time we arrive at the monastery gate\, we have been polished to a shine by our wild wanderings—alert\, radiant\, and ready to enter fully into the depth of practice offered in Tassajara’s enchanted valley. We then spend two nights at Tassajara dedicated to integration\, sinking into the monastery’s offerings of meditation\, serenity\, and community. When it is time to return home\, may we carry this radiant awareness with us\, meeting our ordinary lives and the challenges of our time with more clarity\, presence\, resilience\, and care. \nImportant Notes: \n\nThe full experience takes place over six days\, from Saturday\, May 30th to Thursday\, June 4th\, 2026.\nThe last two nights (June 2 and 3) will require booking accommodations at Tassajara.\nExperience with backpacking or Tassajara/Zen is not required; Wildtender provides support for physical and psychospiritual preparation\, and weaves wilderness skill-building\, Zen instruction\, and orientation to Tassajara into the program.

SUMMARY:EIJI HAPPO: The Eight Sacred Strokes of Calligraphy\, GGF 5/31
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we explore the ancient practice of EIJI HAPPO—the Eight Principles of the character for “Eternity” (永). \nEach stroke embodies a fundamental movement found in all of Japanese calligraphy\, but also reflects a deeper rhythm within ourselves. Through brush\, breath\, and presence\, we will slow down and enter a meditative space where writing becomes a form of self-connection. \nNo prior experience is needed. This is not about perfection\, but about feeling—allowing each line to emerge naturally from your body and heart.
