SUMMARY:One Breath\, One Brushstroke: Intuitive Painting Practice Retreat\, GGF 11/18–11/22
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Nov 18\, 4 pm–Sunday\, Nov 22\, 11 am \nIn this class on intuitive painting\, the invitation is to be mindful as you paint—to paint for the experience\, not for the end product. When we spontaneously create\, we come back to the source at every moment. There is no need to plan\, no need to know anything or to have a goal in mind. There is a simple structure of paint\, paper\, and a brush. It is about the process—the journey to be with whatever arises.  \n\nCan you just watch your brush—take one brush stroke at a time?  \n\nSomething always happens. Paint goes onto the paper.  \nJust like in meditation\, we get to witness our thoughts\, our beliefs\, and our personality structure. And then there are the moments when a color is chosen for no reason; maybe an unexpected image arises and we let it happen. We enter into a flow that touches deeper. Intuitive painting\, when we trust its strangeness\, can take us to the edge of knowing and into the mystery.

SUMMARY:Zazenkai Series\, CC 10/9–11/20
DESCRIPTION:Fridays\, October 9–November 20 \nA series of half-day sittings led by senior students at City Center will take place every Friday morning from October 9 through November 20 in the zendo. Everyone is welcome to drop-in\, no registration required. \nZazenkai\, CC 10/9\nZazenkai\, CC 10/16\nZazenkai\, CC 10/23\nZazenkai\, CC 11/13\nZazenkai\, CC 11/20 \nZazen is the practice of sitting with awareness and experiencing whatever arises. Throughout the history of Zen\, the practice of zazen has been considered the primary agent of awakening. As Dogen Zenji declared\, before bowing\, offering incense or chanting Buddha’s name\, the practice of zazen reveals and expresses awakening. With this in mind\, zazenkai is a period of time dedicated to zazen with minimal traditional formalities. \nThese sittings are suitable for both beginners and experienced sitters. There will be instruction in the details of posture\, breath\, and establishing the mental disposition of experiencing whatever arises. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions about one’s practice. \nThere will be scheduled periods of sitting and walking\, with the option of continuing to sit through the walking meditation if desired. \nPrior Instruction: Although general instruction for meditation is included in these events\, it is recommended that participants attend public Zazen Meditation Instruction beforehand\, which is available in-person on select Saturdays at 8:40 am at 300 Page Street.

SUMMARY:Trans Day of Remembrance\, CC 11/20
DESCRIPTION:There will be a ceremony for Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) in the zendo after evening zazen in place of evening service. \nFrom the GLAAD website: \nTransgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death\, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. \n“Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.”\n– Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith
