SUMMARY:Five-Day Sesshin\, GGF 11/10–11/15
DESCRIPTION:Sesshin\, meaning “to gather\, collect\, and convey the mind-heart\,” is a traditional Soto Zen meditation retreat that includes formal zendo meals\, Dharma talks\, sitting and walking meditation\, and private interviews with senior teachers. \nIn order to understand the nature of our formal retreats\, and to be clear about the details of the practice\, please review a typical sesshin schedule\, as well as the guidelines for zendo conduct. We ask those who attend sesshin to commit to following these guidelines and to participating in the schedule completely. If you have questions regarding the schedule or guidelines\, please consult with the head of the meditation hall (the ino) via email (ggfino@sfzc.org) before completing your registration. \nThe in-person sesshin is open to those who have experience with formal Zen practice\, including at least two in-person One-Day Sittings at Green Gulch Farm or City Center (or comparable experience and permission of sesshin leader). \nThere will be an orientation on Tuesday\, November 10 at 3:00 pm. The sesshin will begin on Tuesday after dinner and conclude with lunch on Sunday. \nTo register for this sesshin\, begin by completing the application form. \nOnce you have been approved for the sesshin\, you will be sent an email with a link to complete your registration and process your payment. \nPlease pay as soon as you are able and at least 2 weeks before the event so waitlist people can be accommodated. \nMeals are included in the cost of sesshin. As most meals will be eaten formally in the zendo meditation hall\, please plan on bringing your oryoki set. If you do not have a set\, you can purchase one on arrival for an additional $55. \nThis sesshin is part of the 2026 Fall Practice Period at Green Gulch Farm\, but is open to registration by those not participating in the practice period. If you are already registered for the practice period there is no need to register for this sesshin.

Please call 415-354-0360 if you have any questions. \n\nFour Wednesdays\, 6:00–7:30 pm PT \n“For Zen students\, a weed is a treasure.”\n—Shunryu Suzuki Roshi \nAre you having difficulty in meditation or concentrating in daily life? Do you find yourself obsessing over love or hate? Falling asleep\, feeling anxious\, restless\, or agitated more often than calm while meditating? Doubting yourself or your practice? \nThe Five Hindrances are common mind-heart states that can impede the development of concentration and mindfulness. In this class\, we will explore classic and contemporary teachings on how to become aware of and work with these states\, as well as how to cultivate their antidotes. \nAs this is a study and practice class\, specific texts\, meditation instructions\, and off-the-cushion practices will be shared and can be used to work with the Hindrances between classes. \nHaving the skills to be at ease in the midst of the Hindrances can enrich your meditation\, making it easier to bring the fruits of your practice into everyday life. \nNo prerequisite is required. If you do not currently have an established practice\, we strongly encourage first taking Meditation Training: Establishing a Meditation Practice in Four Short Weeks\, offered September 30–October 18. \nRecommended Reading\nUnhindered by Gil Fronsdal (not required) \nRecordings:\nAll course sessions will be recorded\, and registered participants will receive temporary access to the recordings for later viewing.
