Hope Cottage

Inside Hope Cottage
HOPE COTTAGE: Hope Cottage is a unique retreat cabin overlooking Green Gulch Farm. Originally built as a sanctuary for Hope Wheelwright by her family, the cottage remains one of the most beloved sites at Green Gulch. Perched on a hill and nestled in a grove of Monterey pines, it has glorious views of the Green Gulch Valley and the Pacific Ocean to the southeast and Mt Tamalpais to the north.

Reaching the cottage requires a 25-minute uphill walk. The road is rough and unmaintained, and is used only by Green Gulch supply vehicles. As short-term guests, you will pack your own belongings and any extra food you would like to take with you. We suggest that you plan to hike up leisurely and enjoy your solitude once you are there. There are miles of hiking trails in several directions from the cottage. Please plan to arrive before 4:00p to check in with the office.

WATER: Hope Cottage does not have its own water source. All of the water needs to be driven up from Green Gulch and is transferred into a 1600 gallon drum above Hope Cottage. During a severe drought, the shower may not always be usable. Guests may also shower in the bathhouse or sauna in the central areas of Green Gulch. The water coming from the tap is potable; however, we suggest you drink the fresh spring water supplied in jugs. Please flush the toilet only when necessary.

BEDDING: The cottage has a double bed and a convertible double sofa. Sheets and towels are supplied.

LIGHT: Two solar panels on the roof can keep the lights going for several hours after dark—the fewer lights you use the longer the power lasts. If the batteries are exhausted, the system will recharge and you will have lights again the next day.

HEAT: We stock plenty of wood for a stove set into a large brick fireplace.

FOOD: The modest kitchen has gas burners, a small refrigerator and utensils and pots. We offer staples such as milk, soy milk, cereal, grains, pasta, fruit, bread, cooking oil, salt, pepper, coffee, tea and jam. You may also join the community for meals in the main area or take food back to the cottage to reheat. Meal times are listed above.

We take reservations up to one year in advance. Please see the calendar below for availability and call us at 415-383-3134 to reserve.

We appreciate your help in taking care of this wonderful place. Thank you very much.
