February 4 - March 16, 2013
300 page street
facilitated by Simon Moyes, Shundo David Haye, and Tim Kroll
Young Urban Zen is offering a 6 week non-residential opportunity to make a commitment to regular practice, be supported by fellow practitioners, take part in Zen Center events, and in YUZ study circles.
Those wishing to take part in this program will be committing to:
-Showing up at the Tuesday YUZ meeting each week at 7:00pm
-Attending one other event at Zen Center each week - this can be a period of zazen or a talk or a class (if you have already signed up for one that is currently happening), or working in the kitchen.
-Participating in a study circle for six weeks, meeting once a week.
There are three separate study circles. Please choose one, and come to each meeting of that group:
1. Supporting Urban Practice - Sitting in the midst of it all,
Mondays 7:30 - 9:00pm, facilitaed by Simon Moyes
What is it to cultivate a practice in daily life? What do we need to establish and deepen our commitment to being present and upright in the swirling activity that is daily life? This group will explore Urban Practice in the container of the 6 week Practice Period through discussions, exercises, and peer support in small groups.
2. Studying Tenzokyokun, The Instructions to the Cook
Tuesdays 5:30 to 6:30pm, facilitated by Shundo David Haye
How does a text written for 13th century Japanese monks help us live the lives we are faced with today? Reading the words of Dogen can give us skills and wisdom to practice in all kinds of situation.
3. The Courage of Practice- Understanding and Overcoming the Obstacle of Fear,
Saturdays, 1:00-2:30pm, facilitated by Tim Kroll
Staying close to the writings of Tibetan buddhist teacher, Ani Pema Chodron, this small group will be investigating the relationship between fear and courage, both in our daily lives and especially in our efforts to start and maintain a regular sitting practice.
Fees: There is a one time cost of $20 to participate.
